the heart of the matter

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late '70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there." Heart statement posted on EW.com
Sen. John McCain's use of the Heart song "Barracuda" after his acceptance speech Thursday night is causing heartburn with the Seattle-based rock group.
Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson posted a message Friday on their Web site condemning the use of their 1977 hit at the Republican convention. The song was played when McCain, the party's presidential nominee, was joined onstage after the speech by his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
The sisters were initially irritated after the song was first played when Palin spoke at the convention Wednesday, according to the Web site EW.com.
The Wilsons said their representatives, Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG, have sent a cease-and-desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign to not use the song as the congratulatory theme for Palin.
Palin reportedly earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" as a high-school basketball player in Alaska.
Republican officials didn't ask for permission to use the song and would not have been given the OK if they had done so, the Wilsons said.

You are absolutely right.
It's tough for the party. If Heart don't want them to use the song, then they can't.
END OF STORY.

I've also read that democrats are registering in RECORD numbers in a good many states. The numbers of dems being registered since Palin joined the ticket far outstrips the number of repubs who are being registered to vote.
Which may indicate that, despite the media attention, and those who will come out to her defense, there are plenty more who are registered just so they can vote against her.
Spin. It's all how you spin it. Which again, as you and I discussed before, is why the media is so ridiculous.

It is seen, particularly if the artist is currently popular, as that artist or group agreeing with the politics of the person(s) using the song.
If I were a musician, and someone with whom I disagreed used my song, it'd make me angry, too.
That goes for ALL candidates, regardless of their political affiliation.
I heard that last week Van Halen got ticked off at McCain for using one of their songs without permission.
While I don't consider any of this real 'news', it is interesting.
You rarely ever hear of artists getting angry with the Dems in the same fashion.
I suspect that in the music biz, there are probably more left-leaning musicians than right-leaning musicians, though.

That's the type of vehicle that a hard working "soccer mom" would use to drop her kids off at school while on her way to the office to work as the govenor of Alaska.
Here's part of a statement by Ann and Nancy Wilson from EW.com:
"The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.)
I guess the Honda Odyssey is not a soulless, corporate type minivan.
The McCain campaign said it had obtained the appropriate licenses to play the song. Copyright law may not be on the Wilsons' side as the song is licensed for public performance under a blanket fee paid by the venue to ASCAP, the firm that collects royalties on behalf of composers and copyright owners.
