to mission or not ?

Published Sep. 7, 2008

So I've decided I'm going to on a mission sometime next year. This is a really big deal since my view on other countries used to be " Oh well, sink or swim on your own "

I'm going to share the journey of the mind and heart so I hope you have the patience to stick with this blog =)

I grew up a daughter of a steel worker so buying American was VERY important to our household. I was brought up you do for yourself, you pay your own bills and you feed your kids and NOT the government. All mothers stayed home in our neighnorhood and no one was divorced.

I grew up in a middle class neighborhood even though I didn't have things like the other kids, barbie, expensive dolls , atari, reebok or guess jeans but my parents showered up with love and affection and doing things together as a family like camping, going to the meusums, history and art.

Then something happened in my early teens, we are the world became a sensation.

This is one of the most vivid memories I have in my life of speaking my mind and feeling like an outsider. I was in the 7th grade and we were in history class and someone gave a report on why we had to donate to the we are the world cause. I must've rolled my eyes cause my teacher called on me and asked if I had an opinion. I shyly said no, but she reassured me that it's good to hear all sides. So I walked up to the little podium, my hands touched the side of the podium

All eyes were upon me, most of the kids were the ones who made fun of me anyway cause I didn't have cool clothes and my parents dressed me oddly and had VERY different views of the world.

I remember saying, " We are not obligated to help them. They breed like roaches then only to watch their children die by the time they are 5 or 7 yrs old and they continue to do this.

I say we can give them our money and food when they learn to take birth control and control themselves. I remember when the steel mill was on strike 9 yrs ago, I don't remember any of you coming to our house to drop food off or helping to pay our bills ( some of their parents who got laid off got on welfare and some of the kids had parents with proffessional jobs ) when we ate mac n cheese for 2 weeks straight. We almost didn't have a christmas tree and we had one gift under the tree that we had to share ( my sister and I ) some of your parents got on welfare and got lazy, my dad got a job as garbage man cause that's what men do to provide for their familes, they do what it takes.

The same people in this class who are crying we need to help these poor people in Africa are the same ones who everyday who pick on me for not having nice clothes and pick on others who are poorer than they are, I refuse to help anyone.

YES I remember everything I said cause my teacher sent a note home to my parents that I had debated a point and she was proud of me for standing up for my thoughts since I was so shy about everything.

My views on third world countries continued and even here in America , my views were the same, cant feed em, dont have them, NO ONE else should pay for that. Especially when I started making my own money and working hard.

3 weeks ago at church we started a project to make money to buy some buildings and turn into a hospital and a residence for the hospital workers in Haiti

. There was this story of a pregnant woman that came to one of the medical stops ( our church is a part of ) to deliver her baby only to find out that baby had died inside and the woman never knew. They told her she needed to go to a real hospital, they carried her on a stretcher into the junlge to never be heard from again.

That day I thought to myself, these women never get to hear their babys heartbeat, heck they don't even know if their baby dies inside the womb. How much we take for granted that we can be at the dr within minutes and have ourselves, our kids and unborn babies checked for their health.

No one ever asked to be born where they are, we should be thankful we are born here and not in some hut where our chance of dying by the time we are 5 yrs old and have to eat dirt to fill our stomachs.

Im turning my attention to the other countries instead of America to help Americans and this is why, Mcdonalds is hiring, NO ONE is above it and i should know cause I've done it. The poorest people in this country is still the richest compared to the other poor of other countries. Also every year our church holds this thing where members of the congregation brings clothes , and toys and people come and get stuff for free or bring stuff and take what they need BUT last year the ones who came cleaned everything out in 30 minutes and stole 2 microwaves and several high chairs that actually belonged to our church. See you give to the so called needy here, they will still steal from you.

I know I will get some backlash from this blog, I love this country but people can get jobs here , they just think they are to good to do some of them.

I want to get out of the comfort zone that I'm used to and experience another side of the world.

Has anyone here gone on a mission ?

and yes I have insomnia tonight

Best of luck to you.I think this is great.God bless you in many ways.

Best of luck to you in your mission and your travels! Learning about other cultures and their people can be fascinating, and it's very personally rewarding to be able to feel like you've helped them, even if it's in some really small way. People in need, such as the ones you mention in Haiti, don't choose to be born in any country, economic situation, or political agenda, and it's great that you're willing to look past all of that to give of yourself.

I really wanted to go on the mission fields as a youner person, after praying many years the Lord showed me that my ""mission Field"" was right in my back yard, so to speak. Ever since then I have felt nothing but peace about my decision.

I was in Haiti many years ago. The country was in terrible shape then, and has gotten worse. Until the corrupt Government there really starts to work on solving their problems, this will just continue. Good luck on your mission. I wish I could agree and say that it will do a lot of good. The truth is, at best you will help in a tiny way. That does not mean it is not worth doing. I do not disagree with you on your statement about the poor here in America. Most of the so-called poor, are far from being poor. In countries like Haiti, they would be viewed as wealthy.

What a wonderful opportunity for you, to go and truly see with your heart. You are right, the poorest here is way richer than most in many other countries. And it is not because of laziness, or lack of will; sometimes, it is because the opportunities just aren't there, or that way of life is all they know. Your blog is wonderful! I applaud your standing (especially when you say that the very same people in school who talked about helping were the ones who made fun of you). It happens all the time, and some of the people who profess to be the most religious are the first to lash out at others in judgment and contempt. You should be so proud of yourself!

Talk to people who have been on missions. Two friends went to Africa and then S America with the Peace Corps forty years ago. They learned a lot, taught a little. They love America now and want to make it better yet.

thanks frag, ive found some people outside of the Usa dont take as much as those born here, this is just from personal experience with them -)

If you give to the needy anywhere, somebody will take more than you intended to give. The minute you step outside yourself, there will be somebody who will take advantage of it. The thing is to keep on giving, regardless.

Haiti may punch some BIG holes in your comfort zone. Braintree's right - if you really see the people, you will never take anything for granted again. Even yourself.

thanks for taking the time to read and comment =)

It will open your eyes in ways you can't imagine. And you will see your soul more clearly than you can imagine. And you will feel God's Hand in everything you do.

You will never take anything for granted again...
