anyone willing to help a lost dog?

This is a male dog that showed up at a friend of ours' house this morning. He doesn't belong around their neighborhood and there have been no "missing dog" reports that match him. He's a mix (mutt-a-mu-callit) and is about 35 pounds right now. We think he's around 6 months old (he still squats to pee and his feet are MUCH bigger than the rest of him). He has medium-length hair and is VERY loving. He is playful without being rough & loves to chase a tennis ball.
He walks well on a leash, will hop into the back of the truck to ride and is familiar with a wire crate, when I went to pick him up, I put him on the tailgate & said "kennel" and he went right in and laid down. We brought him in the house for a little bit and he wanted to play with my Dad's dogs, but they are all antisocial so they wouldn't let him. He basically ignored the 2 cats. He's a lap dog if you let him be, and he wants to be close to you all the time.
I am taking him to the vet tomorrow to be scanned for a microchip, hopefully he'll have one, but if not, we have to find a home for him right away. We don't have any extra big kennels and we can't keep him inside (too many animals inside already). We would just let him wander around on the farm, but we're afraid of what he'll do to our chickens and turkeys (all free-ranged).
I had great success with another dog that we posted on here, so I'm hoping we'll have the same great success this time. Our friends (at whose house he showed up) are willing to help cover the cost of vaccinations and neuter for him, and that will be done prior to him leaving our care.
