after the storm

Published Sep. 6, 2008

I slept like a log last night.  The sound of the rain and wind was actually quite soothing.  I woke this morning, relieved to see that everything seemed to be in order.  No damage in the yard or neighborhood.

I drove out to the barn to check the horses.  Besides being dirty, they were all doing well.  The picture attached is Buddy (the mini-mule) and Jake (the pony).  When we move, our horses will be moving with us.  These two belong to the man where we keep our horses, but he is selling them to the kids, so they will be members of our herd as well.

After lunch, we drove to the land to check on the house.  Everything appeared great from the outside.  Unfortunately, we accidently left 2 windows open in the house.  The window upstairs didn't allow much rain in.  The window casing was a tad damp, but nothing major.  The window in the living room, however, was another story.  The floor - amazingly - was dry.  But the window casing was wet, as well as the dry wall beneath the window.  I didn't know whether to cry, kick or cuss.  So I just dried it the best I could and put a fan on it.

Worst case scenario, we'll replace the dry wall under that window.  We have plenty of scrap and we had not taped or mudded that room yet.  But it was still disheartening to see our blunder.  Oh well, things could have been much worse, I suppose.

Other than that, everything else was fine.  No leaks and no wind damage (Jo. County had some pretty bad wind I heard).  We did take a walk into the woods to see our creek.  It was up, of course.  It was beautiful walking through the woods.  I love it after a good rain, it just seems so crisp and clear, the colors contrasting sharply and the greens so bright and vivid.

Below is a link to some pics of our trip to Lake Gaston for Labor Day and some from today after the storm.

Awwwwwww ... I love the pic! A mini-mule? How precious!!

Fabulous picture. I am glad all was okay. The wind did not even knocke the tomatoes off of the tomato plant. We needed the rain. We were lucky.

:-D I did like the way that the image is sort of muted b/c of the weather and their coloring. I hadn't necessarily thought ghost horses, but I did think it was sort of a cool pic. I wish the mule hadn't rolled in the mud. When he's brushed out, he's snow white. That would have been cool with the foggy weather.

You know that picture is sorta eeeeerrrrieeeee looking. Like they could be ghost horses or something.

I slept it out myself.I am glad all was okay with you and your family and horses.

Yeah! We bought our 12+ acres last year and we've been building our house. We are nearing the end of that project and I can't wait to move and bring the horses home. I've had it great where we've kept them these past 10 years, but it will be nice to see them in my back yard.

We've already had people ask if we'd be willing to sell of a couple of acres. NOPE! I don't want someone building in my back yard. I kind of like the space and privacy!

Well Hello Rockn'.... I have horses around me, but not mine. And houses where I used to work the fields. Makes me sad. I sold 4 acres to a guy to "run horses on" and he promptly sold his house and built practically in my backyard. I should have just made him take a long term lease. pftttt

Well, I can assure you that the horses were there before those roof tops. In fact, we used to ride those fields before there was a subdivision. When we have the time, we still like to ride through there, though. It's so much fun watching the kids come running out of their house to see the horsies. My older guy, Rocky LOVES the kids. He would always ham it up for them.

how cool is that? rooftops in background make it look like city encroachment. But nice.

Look at those freckles, we could have been seperated at birth! ;)
