after the storm
Published Sep. 6, 2008I slept like a log last night. The sound of the rain and wind was actually quite soothing. I woke this morning, relieved to see that everything seemed to be in order. No damage in the yard or neighborhood.
I drove out to the barn to check the horses. Besides being dirty, they were all doing well. The picture attached is Buddy (the mini-mule) and Jake (the pony). When we move, our horses will be moving with us. These two belong to the man where we keep our horses, but he is selling them to the kids, so they will be members of our herd as well.
After lunch, we drove to the land to check on the house. Everything appeared great from the outside. Unfortunately, we accidently left 2 windows open in the house. The window upstairs didn't allow much rain in. The window casing was a tad damp, but nothing major. The window in the living room, however, was another story. The floor - amazingly - was dry. But the window casing was wet, as well as the dry wall beneath the window. I didn't know whether to cry, kick or cuss. So I just dried it the best I could and put a fan on it.
Worst case scenario, we'll replace the dry wall under that window. We have plenty of scrap and we had not taped or mudded that room yet. But it was still disheartening to see our blunder. Oh well, things could have been much worse, I suppose.
Other than that, everything else was fine. No leaks and no wind damage (Jo. County had some pretty bad wind I heard). We did take a walk into the woods to see our creek. It was up, of course. It was beautiful walking through the woods. I love it after a good rain, it just seems so crisp and clear, the colors contrasting sharply and the greens so bright and vivid.
Below is a link to some pics of our trip to Lake Gaston for Labor Day and some from today after the storm.

We've already had people ask if we'd be willing to sell of a couple of acres. NOPE! I don't want someone building in my back yard. I kind of like the space and privacy!
