mrkagain - if you are interested I can tell you everything you could ever want to know about traditional fish and chips. Many people's descriptions aren't traditional and many would raise the eyebrows of many a brit. I can even let you know what the must-have green slop in the picture is...

They are Mushy Peas.
I *love* shrimp'n'grits. I also have that if it is on a menu, especially if they are done spicy.

They are called Mushy Peas and split pea soup is quite similar. The peas have to be marrowfat peas to get the right flavor. They are traditional side with fish and chips. They look a bit grim but taste great.
