how's your weather?
Published Sep. 6, 2008Well, it's getting here, so thought I'd share my storm observations from my little cottage in Clayton.
It's 12:30a.m. here. The rain in the last 15 minutes has increased from a comfortable 'soaking' rain to a steady rain. I'm a little surprised to hear the rumble of thunder. I wasn't expecting that until the actual storm got closer. Same with the lightning. There are occasional flashes, brighter than I expected, but that may be because the clouds are so low. The lightning is coming from all sides. Can't say it's just south or west - there's no one area that seems to be the source. The wind is calm, and with all the other activity that's kind of a surprise. I would expect more wind with the rain and lightning I'm seeing.
1:00 a.m. Rain has slacked back to the 'soaker' type. Doesn't seem to be hitting the ground as hard. But the wind is still practically non-existant. I'm missing the wind - it would feel so good to be blowing into the house, but not getting any of it yet.
1:30. a.m. The rain is coming and going, but nothing heavier than a good soaker. Good news is the occasional breezes are starting to come. Nice, comfortable evening level breezes. The tree limbs are heavy with all the rain, and they sway like tipsy part-goers when the breezes start up. Nothing frantic. Nice night - so far.
2:37 a.m. Just had a sustained wind - lasted about 2 minutes. Has died down a little, but definitely not a breeze or gust. Still a slight background wind, and the thunder has just again rumbled at me - first time in an hour.
3:40 a.m. Nothing, just nothing, going on. Trees are quiet, and the crickets have started chirping. Is that a good sign? Not even rain drips being heard. *sigh* Is this going to go all around us?
3:54 a.m. Well, it's definitely not going to miss - I just got a nice wind gust - tugged at the eaves a little. Very brief, but a precursor of what's to come, I guess! This could get exciting - but it's still just a tease at the moment. Crickets have shut up - that's eerie... Nothing shuts crickets up..
4:06 a.m. A rumble of thunder ushered in a good rain. There's a wind right now, too. Feels nice, like the beach. Rain is almost drowning out the TV in the background. Rain's falling at a nice angle, pushed by wind from the east. Two minutes sustained wind and rain at the moment. Can't hear any thunder at the moment - might be drowned out by the rainfall.
4:30 a.m. Quiet once again. I know, I know, it's not over. Each band is getting more intense. Still teasing, but promising a little more than I thought we might get. Rain is over. No crickets. Power has been holding up well - no fluctuations or anything, and that's nice. Waiting for the next installment!
4:45 a.m. Little breeze just wandered through the house. Feels like the temp is dropping a little. Humidity seems to be picking up, too. No surprise there, huh?
5:39 a.m. Rain just starting up, and building in intensity quickly. Wind coming up too. Nothing stormy, but nice to have the rain. Humidity is climbing, climbing, climbing. Getting sticky in the house.
(I'll be updating this as the night goes on. If the electricity holds up! LOL!)

Hope your alarm goes off (does that sound as wierd as I think it does?)
Sleep well. The rain should help there!

Must not sound too ominous yet, as the dog hasn't gone into panic mode. Maybe I should get out the "little pink treats" while I still have time!
Hope everyone is safe and secure.
