how to properly change a diaper
Published Sep. 5, 2008If you need a refresher course or just a laugh, this is for you. The following are the steps that MUST be followed for licensed child care in NC in order to change a diaper. Please keep in mind that Family Child Care Homes are also supposed to follow this and we typically work alone, with no assistants. It's just us.
Also, AtWork,,,here's the blog I promised you!
Alright, for those that do not know how to properly change a diaper, the state of NC has written it out for you
One are should be selected for diaper changing and used consistently. the area should be physically separated from food preparation and serving areas, including food sinks. The diapering surface should be non porous and no containers can be stored on the diapering surface.
To prepare for a change, BEFORE bringing child to the diaper changing area, have ready enough wipes for the change, including enough wipes to wipe bottom and hands of child and provider after removal of soiled diaper. (Wipes must be removed from box BEFORE diaper change begins. Have a clean diaper, plastic bag for soiled diaper/clothes, gloves, and a dab of diaper cream (if being used) on a wipe.
Wash providers hands using correct handwashing procedures.
Place child on changing surface. Remove clothing to access diaper. Remove soiled diaper and place in plastic bag and into lined, hands free trash container.
Use wipes to clean child's bottom from front to back
Use wipe to remove soil from adult's hands
Use wipe to remove soil from child's hands
Throw used wipes into hands free trash container
Put clean diaper on child and redress child
Move child to sink and following handwashing procedures (that's a whole other story)
Wash providers hands
Remove child to supervised area
Spray changing surface with soapy water and wipe dry with disposable towel
Spray diapering surface with bleach solution and let dry a minimum of 2 minutes (can not spray this solution in the presence of children and providers must keep children in sight at all times)
Wash hands using handwashing procedure without contaminating any other surface
NOTE: If same sink is used to wash hands for any other purpose than diaper changing and toileting, sink MUST be sanitized after each diaper change and/or toilet use
Now you have it folks.

Yep! I remember those days. Yuck! It's a wonder mothers and big sisters didn't get leprosy or something.
God bless.

I did once, but stopped because the cloth diapers simply didn't keep things contained. One of the twins did a sloppy doodle one time then went down the slide before I noticed, and left you-know-what trails all down the slide. Yuck!
God bless.

I use to bring TWO clean diapers and put one under the child's hiney BEFORE removing the soiled diaper, just in case they get the urge to whatever while you're storing the soiled diaper in the plastic toss bag...cause you know very well, sometimes they will - and then it's everywhere.
But if you put one of the clean diapers beneath them before you even unfasten the soiled one, it's just one more thing to sop up the mess while you're trying to deal with things.
God bless.
