bee - javajoe's picture of the day for 9/4/08

Today's picture? Just a bee (EDIT: Not really. It's a bumblebee moth). Do you remember the first time you were stung by a bee, wasp, hornet, or other flying insect? Have you ever found youself in the middle of a swarm of bees? Or maybe your backporch has been taken-over by honeybees or wasps one summer. Whatever your case, share your stories and comments!

UPDATE! Ashen-Shugar pointed out that the picture isn't of a bee -- it's really a moth. A Bumblebee Moth!

It is a moth, but it looks remarkably like a Bumblebee. The first time I saw one, I thought that it was just deformed. You will see them early morning or late evening, more than during the heat of the day.

That is not a bee, it is a moth.

I can't imagine getting stung on the "but-tox," lawpirate. That's a story I'd be careful about sharing! lol

See! Everybody has a story! Thanks for telling yours, JohnnyMalaria. I was probably 8-9 years old and in the vegetable garden when a bee started flying around me. I swatted at it and ran back to the house -- I never liked bees as a kid. Later on that day, the same bee (I like to think, of course it probably wasn't the same bee) landed on my neck. I didn't know what it was, so I reached up to grab it and BAM - it got me on my thumb. Ever since then, I've had a scar on my thumbprint. Ever since then, if something lands on my back I just yell for somebody to brush it off!

The first time I was ever stung I was about 6 and playing hide-n-seek with my next door neighbor. I was hiding in the bushes by his house and I got stung in the but! I also got stung by a yellowjacket in front of my kindergarten class once (I was the teacher). youch!

8:50am Monday September 26th, 1980. Age 14.

I was sitting against a wall in the school yard. The 8:50 bell rang so I stood up to go to the school hall for a morning assembly. As soon as I was completely upright, I felt an intense sting on the inside of my left calf. I went into the toilets and dropped my trousers only to discover the tail end of a bee stuck in my skin.

I went to see the school doctor (a risky maneuver at any time, more so given the location of my wound). Consequently, I missed our music teacher playing Stairway To Heaven on the piano. I was gutted. Earlier at 8:00am that morning as I was heading out of the door at home, I had heard the news come on the radio that John Bonham had be found dead the day before.

These two seemingly unrelated events combine to a powerful memory of the death of someone I greatly admired for his musical prowess and the pain of my first sting.

cool pic.

love it !!!!!
