hurricane histeria

Published Sep. 4, 2008

When I lived at Beaufort (10 yrs), I paid attention to any serious weather. I learned that the forcasters always exaggerated how soon the storm would arrive, the "surge", 20 inches of rain, the winds...you name it, and I was a block off the water. We (now I), never evacuated, and never regretted it. The sheltors would not take dogs, nor most hotels. Inland, Raleigh area, has little to worry about.  The worst weather to come to Raleigh were a series of tornados, the Friday after Thanksgiving in the mid 90's. Ask Steve.

My concern is that these 2 million people, most of whom were unneccesarily evacuated from the gulf, and prevented from returning home for several days after the storm...will not leave again. Who wants to spend extra days in a high school gym, with a thousand people you do not know, on a cot, limited hygeine access, for days after the storm has passed? Not me.  I don't care if electricity is out...there are lots of other options.

This "better to be safe than sorry" line by officials will prove dangerous as people will learn that "crying wolf" has repercussions. They may not leave when there is real danger.

My advice, always have flashlights and candles available, and of course some beenie weenies. There are alot more ideas on some blogs yesterday.

There is no need to panic in Raleigh. Now they are saying we MAY get 2-3 inches of rain...sheet, we got 3 inches a week ago.  I can spit and hit Crabtree Creek, so I watch the rain forcast. It has to flood 3 ft above the creek line to get my 50 inch plasma TV. The 'puter is on the second story. I am not saying be careless, just use your own judgement, rather than the media hypes.

Sitting here, about 20 miles inland from Topsail/Surf City area, "just'a waitin' on Hanna". It's very overcast... not sure if that is all clouds, or some morning haze that might burn off. A slight breeze is starting to blow.

You all be safe!

Same here, I used to live in Florida and my backyard was on a large bayou that went to the bay. We didn't get concerned unless we were getting a direct hit from a cat 3 or better. We just cleaned up the mess and kept going. If cat 3 or better we battened up and left town for a couple of days.

I am in Savannah, Georgia and you would think the end of the world was coming 2 days ago...lines and more lines. Hanna never worried me...however I am not liking the looks of Ike. During Hugo and then Floyd, I went behind the storm because unless it is a Camille, I have a lot less fear of it turning back than I do being in front of it where tornadoes are spun off. Savannah was blessed when Hugo turned 5 degrees and struck Charleston (sorry Charleston)instead of us. But being in insurance, I hear it all....and try to sift out the chaff to get to the meat of the story. Ike is barrelling along, and is plowing straight toward the islands and unless something changes, Florida. I don't care to think of what damage a Cat 4 will do to an already soaked Florida.

I guess it depends on where you live and if your area is prepared to handle weather-related problems. With Fran, here in central NC near the Virginia border, we were without electricity for at least a week. Lots of trees were down; you pretty much had to carry a chainsaw with you if you wanted to get somewhere. My husband almost got hit by a tree branch and a falling live wire (This was the following morning when things had calmed down). So, while there is a lot of hype, people need to take caution when evaluating possible damage afterwards.

I am not too worried about Hanna, but I have to admit I am watching Ike with interest.

my hubby is from Topsail Island. Cat 3 or higher, the family comes up here. Other than that, they usually just batten down the hatches and ride it out. But they are on the ICW, somewhat protected....

I don't pay attention to what the weather guys say very much, I watch the weather for myself, and that includes hurricanes. Being ready for a power outtage is the thing, and that works in winter or summer. The only thing I didn't have was a battery for my flashlight, and I had the best time playing with it last night after the new battery was in. I stay ready for stuff like that all the time, living out in the country will make you that way. I just think it's pretty silly for people to be so flipant and think the bad storms can't happen here, they can. But if you're ready, it's a lot less miserable.

We had hurricane parties when I lived in Wilmington.

I'm with you Jack! I'm from Havelock. Hurricanes were a reason to party.

pike, I agree the nor easters were terrible, and never had the advance hype. I lost trees to them, never a hurricane.

10 yrs really isn't very long.My family has lived on Ocracoke for 70+ years and they will still get stumped by a storm.Especially a Nor'Easter.
