new to the east coast & hurricanes?
Published Sep. 3, 2008I recently met a young Vet Tech who moved to the area from Colorado. We were talking about all the rain that was falling. Neither one of us knew right then that the rain was actually the remnants of Hurricane Fay. She said it rained so little where she's from, and asked if this is what hurricanes are like. I told her yes, if the thing has had a chance to weaken. So I wondered, what would I tell someone if they had never been in this situation before, to help them prepare? There are many, many small things, like having a manual can opener on hand. My last hurricane was Fran, so actually, I wonder if I am ready myself. Suggestions?

An axe or chainsaw is handy to take care of trees that may be blocking the way and be extra careful of the downed power lines.
Just have plenty of board games and cards to play with during the power outages which can last a few days. And if you haven't thrown away those rabbit ear antenna yet you'll be using them to get whatever tv stations are available when the power comes back on.
Sometimes cable will be up and running but be prepared if it's not. I don't have satellite so I can't tell you about that.
Use the common sense factor when using candles etc. and if you live in a condo or apt complex you may want to get a carbon monoxide detector. We had a neighbor bring his grill into his apartment after he had just finished cooking and nearly killed everyone near him.
Just be safe. I don't know if this one will be that bad or not but just used your head and be safe.
