your best hurricane advice
Published Sep 3, 2008Views: 570
Last week it was Gustav, and this week it's Hanna. As a former Florida resident, I am all too familiar with hurricanes and I've learned that a large number of North Carolina residents share that same familiarity.
So, as Hanna approaches and people begin to revisit their hurricane plans, what's the best advice you can offer to anyone who isn't quite sure about mobilizing?
Based on your experience, what can you tell them?
Start now? Wait it out? Give it a few days?

PARENTS do not let your children play in water. Many drowning happens after a hurricane when they get swept and stuck in drainage pipes and such. I remember this happening several times. I never understood such play but I guess with some kids puddles and water equals fun.

During one of our hurricanes one of our neighbors who was from another country brought his grill inside his apartment after he had finished cooking and nearly killed everyone around him. (I think he thought someone wanted his 5 year old weber-wannabe grill). Luckily the couple who lived above him who had just brought home their newborn had one and called the fire department. This guy was not from a country south of the border (I'd read that this same scenario has been a problem in the past) and he seemed to be pretty bright and well educated so it can happen to anyone.

Also, playing cards are great for passing the time with kids.

If you have kids stock up on plenty of things to keep them entertained in case you have an extended power outage. Kids today are used to having a video game to play or movie to watch.
And make sure that you have an evacuation plan for your pets if you might have to evacuate. We have never evacuated before, but we at least know what we would do with the dogs and iguana if it came to that.
