Check out the image. From left to right:
- We have the remnants of Hurricane Gustav over Louisiana (keep that in mind for a moment.)
- We have Hanna to the east of Cuba which looks like it is heading our way by this weekend.
- We have an area of disturbed weather labeled as 2 which probably will not develop into a storm, but will act to fuel atmospheric juiceness in the wake of Hanna.
- Ignore location 3.
- Then there is Ike. Who knows what Ike is gonna do at this point.
- Finally, there is TD 10, just upgraded moments ago to a tropical depression, following in the track of Hanna -- maybe.
Now, back to Gustav. Picture this.
Hanna hits NC on the 6th and dumps a bunch of rain on already saturated ground still wet from Fay. Ike goes to our south, but the slow-moving remnants of Ike COMBINE with the slow-moving remnants of Gustav and hammer us with tremendous amounts of rain on the 10th. Then TD 10 comes roaring in as a cat 3 storm on the 14th, passing through central NC and pretty much removing any tree over five feet tall.
Likely? Not really. But possible nonetheless.
Addendum:
I also have to add this note regarding Hurricane Gustav as well as my hypothetical scenario above. The National Weather Service absolutely nailed the path, strength, and effects of Gustav on Louisiana and New Orleans. And they did so over the idiotic predictions of many members of the media and Ray Nagin who were predicting the "mother of all storms."
Bottom line...quit sensationalizing the weather and pay attention to the National Hurricane Center and what they say.

When you want to get excellent coverage of these kinds of situations, always turn to the local guys. I watched some of the silliness unfolding on the cable nets yesterday. Oh, dear.
WWL's coverage (as it was during Katrina) was measured, calm and interesting. They didn't need to resort to buffoonery.

Make sure what the policies will be where you live, though. Louisiana may have made policy decisions and implemented them regarding pet evacuations, but North Carolina may not have made decisions yet. Check with your local emergency management office and find out if there are any pet-safe designated shelters.

Wonder if it's some sort of forshadowing of how the vacation will be - again!
