don't get sick on holidays or weekends!

Published Aug. 30, 2008

ECU trains physycians and nurses. Why on EARTH can't a few of them stay on a 27,000 student-strong campus to tend to sick students on holidays and weekends? I guess spending $14,000 for college per student doesn't allow for ONE physician and ONE nurse to stay on call at the infirmary? Shouldn't the ECU school of medicine utilize their positions in training and physician care? After all, these days, the physicians need to learn most of all that people do not get sick only between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday! If that is the job you intend to do, then live with the facts and take the responsibility. God knows you get paid enough, but don't treat it like a desk job!

The issue here should concern any parent that has a child at ECU or any other college that doesn't provide 24 hr. access to health care. What other colleges are running a 9-5, M-F type of approach to the student's health care? When your child is extremely sick and it is a holiday, they are put in danger due to the fact that the university has "shut down'. No bus transportation. No student store to buy medicines. NO PHYSICIAN on call.

ECU SHOULD BE BETTER THAN THIS and so should all the other major universities!

Everyone has a valid point here! Doctor's offices around here aren't open on weekends either. But...Mom, I feel for you because it is your job to care for your child and when they are sick you want to help. I don't care how old the child is! My son called last weekend with horrible ear pain. I told him to find a friend with a car or get his RA to take him to the nearest urgent care. Unless you are a mom you will never understand the need to take care of your child(ren).

As for ECU and the party school image. I agree with those folks who say: What school isn't a party school?!! So, the dad transferred his child to UNC because it isn't a party school? haha make me laugh. Kids drink at every college. I'm sure that kid drank at UNC as well.

@work

Sounds like your friend didn’t have any self-discipline and needed daddy close by to keep him nose to the grindstone. As a Raleigh native and one who has been to all the area Universities for weekend trips, the amount of partying is the same. It's just they do it better @ECU!

Aw come on. If you're old enough to be in college you are old enough to take care of yourself. I'm 21 years old and a senior at NC State. I agree that the medical care is sub par, but college is about more than class, football games, and parties. You have to learn how to take care of yourself. If you need to get to a doctor, be creative. There are a lot of students with cars that would be more than willing to give you a ride. If you are so sick that you can't wait to see a doctor during regular office hours then go to an urgent care or ER somewhere. If it's bad enough, call 911. That's what it's there for. Do your parents have a doctor's office in their neighborhood that is operable 24/7, within walking distance? I doubt it.

On the other hand I agree that someone should staff the medical offices 24/7 or at least be on call. We pay a lot of money to go to these schools, and the service just isn't there.

Dreaming - You are exactly correct! You can go to party or you can go to get a job.

I have done my best to impress this upon my college freshman. She has never been a partier but you still have to stay focused on the REASON you are there.

LoL at Len

As an “older” student at NCSU, this is one of the few things that doesn’t bother me too much.

I have other sources for my medical care.

Besides, they probably don’t have a gerontologist on call anyway ....

STS

not saying anything bad but thats just what I was told and did see my self.

dreaming, the reasons Im saying this is when I was in college everyone always was going to partys at ecu, and I had a friend that went there and also said that it was nothing but partying so his dad transfered him to unc.

And of those saying ECU is a party school...please...show me a school that doesn't have partying. My son graduated with a degree in communcations, he walked out of there in the summer landed a top job in public relations that fall...his first assignemnt they flew him all expenses paid to NYC..He's traveled to Las Vegas, Denver, plus at least 5 other big cities for his job, with his company footing the bill. College is really what the student is willing to put into it himself.

Sorry to hear about your son. As a mother of a young man who graduated from ECU 2006, I went through the same thing. A little advice from a mom who's been there. Make sure he has his ins. card from your family policy, that way he can have a friend take him to a clinic off campus if it's that serious. Second, give him a well stocked first aide kit, that also contains things like Tylenol, cold/flu meds. etc...put it in a small locked box that he has a key for. Also, buy him a bike!! Freshman cars are useless at ECU. Parking lot is too far away. My son thought he was being a genius by sneaking and parking in other spots. I can't tell you the fines I had to pay each semester for invalid parking. Hope he gets better soon.
