textbooks
Published Aug. 29, 2008We just started our new school year. I am in college studying Respiratory Therapy and my three oldest boys are in the 6th, 8th, and 9th grades. We home school so we have to provide our own textbooks and supplies. I just spent $548 on the books for my college classes this semester and my wife just ordered over $475 worth of school books for our boys. We do not allow the boys to write in their workbooks so that we can turn around and sell them when we get finished withthem, but sometimes it is cheaper to let them write in the workbooks than it is for us to copy and print the pages they need. Who else out there can relate to our situation?

Our school just bought "new editions" of our former textbook. The only thing that has changed is that the publisher removed information. to make the book a bit shorter and added some more photographs.
When I went back to school in a UNC program, we had to purchase software for organizing our assignments -- it was over $80 and we were told the version we needed could only be purchased at their bookstore. (I found it online for $60, though.)
Do you think some college instructors or departments receive "incentives" from these companies if they select certain books? I wonder how they go about selecting the books for the course?

Appalachian State includes the books with the tuition. I don't know if that is a good thing or if it is a ploy to avoid the used book stores.
