textbooks

Published Aug. 29, 2008

We just started our new school year. I am in college studying Respiratory Therapy and my three oldest boys are in the 6th, 8th, and 9th grades. We home school so we have to provide our own textbooks and supplies. I just spent $548 on the books for my college classes this semester and my wife just ordered over $475 worth of school books for our boys.   We do not allow the boys to write in their workbooks so that we can turn around and sell them when we get finished withthem, but sometimes it is cheaper to let them write in the workbooks than it is for us to copy and print the pages they need. Who else out there can relate to our situation?

It would be nice if the publishers would create paperback versions of textbook to help bring costs down.

Our school just bought "new editions" of our former textbook. The only thing that has changed is that the publisher removed information. to make the book a bit shorter and added some more photographs.

When I went back to school in a UNC program, we had to purchase software for organizing our assignments -- it was over $80 and we were told the version we needed could only be purchased at their bookstore. (I found it online for $60, though.)

Do you think some college instructors or departments receive "incentives" from these companies if they select certain books? I wonder how they go about selecting the books for the course?

ASU has been doing that for YEARS. Heck, I used it wayyyyyyy back in 1986. It's a great idea! Only thing I had to buy was paperbacks, and the book store sold used ones. I think my tuition, including books, for 18 hours was a whopping 328$ per semester.......

night all I hear the dream weaver calling.

I hope to be fully prepared to meet any challenges that come my way. I am looking forward to helping improve people's quality of life even if it is just for a few short days.

Aruba, you don't smoke do ya?

yougottabekidding, well I guess we should all be grateful that your textbooks are all very, very current. Good call. Wish I could help. I'm glad you got some financial aid and I wish you well in your studies. I may need you one day.

There is a place in Raleigh called the Home School Gathering Place where we buy and sell curriculum. It is consignment shop. But, to quote The Stones, "You can't always get what you want" so sometimes you gotta pay retail.

Edward McKay's in Fayetteville has a great selection of used textbooks and a decent selection of used home school books,,and they purchase also

All my books are Respiratory specific. I had a little bit of financial aid this semester so I bought my books from the college book store. Of course all my required textbooks are the newest editions and you can not get them used. We are all going through the program as a class so we all have the same classes and same books. One of the girls in my class was in this program last year but had to drop out for some reason. She had bought all her books last year. Most of them can not be used this year so she had to buy them all over again.

I just forked out well over $500 for my granddaughters books.

Appalachian State includes the books with the tuition. I don't know if that is a good thing or if it is a ploy to avoid the used book stores.
