is this really hunting?
Palin is a defender of this?
doesn't seem like much of a sport to me.
Seems to be a big waste of plane fuel and very unfair for the wolves.

Combine this with her lawsuit to remove the Polar Bears from the endangered species list to make it easier to drill for oil in her state and she's not likely to win many votes from animal lovers.

I don't care for trophy hunting at all,

but I ask, if a dead wolf bothers you

what does 30 million aborted babies do to you?

Is that your AMERICA?

Good question Djofraleigh. I don't trophy hunt. We eat what we hunt.

"Quit watching idiotic videos taken by people with an agenda." Steve Crisp

Agreed, settle into the blog reading, where there is clearly no agenda...

There are more humane and effective methods of reducing a wolf population or protecting livestock from it. You just have to be willing to put the time, money, and thought into it. Aerial gunning is just lazy, cowardly, and cruel. I shudder to think of a proponent of this appalling practice being responsible for sending our troops to war. Diplomacy is hard -- if it were easy, everybody would be doing it. Attacking other countries is easy, but look where we are with Iraq now -- trillions of dollars in debt, and that amount soaring; thousands of American lives lost or shattered; our military straining under the burden, and countless veterans coming home needing care the VA is not yet equipped to provide; and other nations getting bold and rattling sabers, knowing that we're not up to challenging them right now if we wanted to. Are we safer now than six years ago? No, we still can't take a bottle of water onto a plane, because THE WAR CANNOT STOP TERRORISTS. Please, no more easy solutions!

* IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!!

The wolf control project was NEVER EVER designed to be a hunt. It is a population control measure only. The term sporting has absolutley nothing to do with it. I keep hearing this subject argued as a hunt. 100% wrong. I know the pilots andd shooters involved.

Also this is rural Alaska we are tal;king about. A COMPLETLEY different culture than the urban environments that foster most of the opposition.

wolves are endangered, so this hunt is not about population control. It's simply a big game hunt against an apex predator. And farming interests in Alaska - with a 3 month season - please. Wolves are very intelligent and dream - to dream you must remember events and recreate them in the dream - making them cognizant. You don't shoot dogs - if you shoot mine I'll kill ya. I enjoy hunting (usually herbavores, but I've gone after a croc once), and I believe in the basic rule of hunting: don't shoot it if you're not going to eat it. Nobody's running to the market for wolf steaks.

The bounty on wolves claim is political mis-information to try to smear Gov. Palin. No matter what your politics, it's not fair to anyone to allow lies about either side to circulate on the net. I researched this claim on the Alaska Legislature site and submitted it to Snopes.com. If you look at the official Alaska site, the bounty was proposed by the Alaska Dept of Fish & Game (not Gov. Palin) to be used within a certain remote area where the wolves were decimating the caribou and moose herds as a means to protect help protect the herds. The wolves in this area are overpopulated and each spring during calving season they are killing off most of the newborn calves, homing in on them by the scent of blood. The wolves not only endanger the prey species in the area, but are invested with lice due to overpopulation. Wolves are difficult and expensive to control in this part of Alaska, so the bounty was proposed to help offset some of the expense. The proposal was never implemente

Bounties were historically paid to entice people to help control Wolves but they were ended in the 1970's. It is also notable that they do not issue "hunting licenses" for wolves only "control permits" because the sportsmen have no interest in them and they are not used for food. There are also some areas in Alaska where wolves cannot be killed at all because there is no threat to other wildlife. While I am an avid animal lover and wildlife conservationist, I also realize there will always be hunting. Some areas of the country depend on hunting for a good portion of their food. Alaska has a long history of shooting wolves from low flying aircraft in the most remote areas (not everywhere). I am not advocating nor condemning this method because I understand the argument from both sides. Shooting from low flying aircraft is not something people do for "fun". They must remove the door from the plane and fly in sub-zero temperatures during winter months when the wolves can

The wildlife management reports I read, indicated that "wound & injure rates were very low" and they reported wound & injure rates associated with other hunting methods as well. The report also states one of the main reasons for collecting the forelegs is to ensure that animals are actually killed not just wounded. I think law makers have a responsibility to make and enforce laws that require humane hunting practices. As I read the 144 pages of the report I was impressed at the amount of thoughtful study and detailed information that it contained and that they actually are concerned with "wound & injure" rates, lice etc. - and that they outlawed shooting of wolves in areas where they are not a threat. I'm not saying they are perfect or can't be improved upon, but I don't believe this is as big an issue as some are trying to "spin" it to be.

I'm not sure what Mr. Obama’s position on killing wolves (or any other wildlife) is. However I do know he is personally responsible for blocking a bill that would have allowed doctors to give medical treatment to babies born alive after botched abortions. He listened to personal testimony from nurses who were only allowed to hold these babies for their short lives and watch them inhumanly suffer and fade away which often takes hours. Obama personally blocked the state bill even after wording was changed be the same as the Federal Bill which passed the US Senate unopposed (Both Hillary & Kerry voted in favor of the bill). I cannot vote for someone who has that little regard for human life. I also cannot imagine that someone who is not concerned with the humane treatment of newborn babies would somehow be concerned with humane treatment of animals. Here are links to the full congressional testimony of some of these nurses- no spin added. http://nobamanews.blogspot.co

Sorry the url's didn't make it into my last post: Here are links to the full congressional testimony of some of these nurses- no spin added. http://nobamanews.blogspot.com/2008/07/jill-staneks-full-testimony_05.html http://nobamanews.blogspot.com/2008/07/allison-bakers-full-testimony.html the federal law - no spin added http://www.nrlc.org/ObamaBAIPA/BAIPAFederal.pdf Jill Stanek is the nurse who took this issue to her state legislature. This is the link to her full report in Citizen Link (non-partisan) (Yes, she does have an agenda too - she is pro-life, however her objective in this case was only to fight for babies born alive - not to fight all abortion.) http://www.citizenlink.org/content/A000007034.cfm#

I missed this blog earlier, but please let me try to explain. In rural areas moose and caribou are the staple that people live on. Combined with fish, that is the basic diet of most Alaskans that live in rural villages. In villages, there are no "grocery stores". In the tiny stores that might exsist in a village (usually there is only one) food is VERY expensive if there is any at all. Milk in Galena for instance is $10 a gallon. Combine that is the nonavailability of being able to get meat except when you take a $400 roundtrip to town to grocery shop, it is easy to see why moose and caribou are the meat you eat. Now, in some areas wolves and bear have decimated the moose and caribou populations. Aerial wolf control is just that. There is no hunting to it. It is not designed to be a hunt, or is it designed to make it easier for trophy hunters have more success. It is done entirely to make it easier for people to put meat on their table. I hope this clears things up a little

One other thing...Our Constitution MANDATES that our natural resources are to be developed and utilized. We have not had a constitutional ammendment to change this. In the area of fish and wildlife, it is to be managed for "sustained yield". That means managed to make it easier to put meat on my table. If you have time and the interest, our Constitution is an interesting read. The part about resources is in section VIII. It is also the document that makes possible the money we receive from the sale of our oil. Resources are covered VERY thoroughly in our Constitution.

Just another Palin hater. Nothing new here.
