Published Aug. 28, 2008Why Democrats need big Government:
I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl the other day. I asked her what
she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "I want to be President!"
Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there. So then I
asked her, "If yo u were President what would be the first thing you would do?"
She replied, "I'd give houses to all the homeless people."
"Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're
President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and
sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery
store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use
toward a new house."
Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom
glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the
homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"
And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."
Her folks still aren't talking to me.

Maybe we need to reform our Social Services program to actually ASSIST people in getting off of welfare instead of making it easier to just sit at home and collect checks." -IDontCare3
True. Though, welfare reform has done some of this already. But the problems run deeper still.

On another thought, I've always wondered what the crime rate would be if there was no such thing as welfare and other various social programs. I might be wrong about this, as I've never done any research, but I think it would be much higher. I see it as the lesser of two evils if I have to pay some scum with my tax money rather than them coming into my house or mugging my girlfriend." -bullet656
I concur. In fact, you are spot on. While the criminological studies I've seen show little correlation between the state of the economy and violent crime, excluding robbery, of course, Property crimes (and robberies) would indeed increase.
So, welfare and other wealth distribution schemes become the bargains that civilized society makes with the unassimilable to maintain order.
But we've hit a tipping point and have moved from placation to outright encouragement.

Well, perhaps some critical analysis rather than a drive-by posting is in order. From the aforementioned data, 23% of the homeless were vets, 45% of those have some mental illness. Thus, roughly 10% could possibly have service-related PTSD.
I would suggest that number is even lower, given the lowered standards of today's military; that is, some percentage had an existing disorder when they enlisted.
So, again, to pretend that the bulk of our homeless are PTSD afflicted vets doesn't hold up.

This is because the system is a trap! It's much easier to stay at home and have babies because as soon as you get a minimum wage job your benefitis (medicaid, food stamps, afdc) is cut.

Do you understand what I'm saying? Do you know anyone at SS? They could probably explain it better than I can.

I wonder why? Could it possibly be POST TRAUMATIC STRESS? Just a thought...

We would probably find that people are quite resourceful when push comes to shove. Shutting of the free tap, or at least putting limits on it (ala the Welfare Reform Act of 1996) goes along way in persuading people to help themselves. However, pretending that everyone deserves a high standard of living has got to stop.
For the substance abusers, I have no sympathy. If you'd like to take a few into your home so they don't die, that's great.
Finally, for the seriously mentally ill, that is where society has to make some hard choices. I'm sure we could wring out some inefficiencies in gov't spending to scrape up enough money and corral these people into some type of internment.

bellet656, I think the moral of the story is twofold. First, there IS a large segment of society that has figured out it is easier to work the system than it is to work for a living. Second, the liberal seems very charitable with my money.
A shining example of these two points is the fantastic failure of pre-1996 Welfare.
