changes in raleigh

Published Aug. 28, 2008

I have lived in Raleigh, NC for over thirty years, all my life.  I was born at Old Rex and currently live about three blocks from where I was born.  Growing up and living as an adult in Raleigh, I have seen a lot of changes in the area, some good, some bad.  I sometimes joke that I can remember when Raleigh was a southern town.  And while I'm kidding around when I say that, there's an element of truth to it.  As this area has expanded rapidly with an influx of people from all over the country and all over the world, things have started to look different.

While there have been some drawbacks to our rapid growth, there have also been a lot of positive changes in Raleigh in the past thirty years.  Like what, you ask?  Well, for me, I've enjoyed a rich arts and cultural community.  I love going out to eat at high end restaurants.  I've been lucky enough to have jobs that were brought into the area by the new growth.

So now I ask you: what benefits have you enjoyed from Raleigh becoming a more diverse, metropolitan city?  As I've said, I know that there are some negative aspects to our city's expansion, but that's not what this blog is about.  This is about recognizing and celebrating some of the things Raleigh has gained as we've gained our new population.  So tell me what YOU like!

I moved here 20 years ago, and I too have seen some vast changes since my arrival. Having a lot of people in a city brings some good things with it. For one, great concerts. And another is professional sporting events. And most recently added to our list of new things to have is GOLO, where there is most always activity to be entertained with.

QUOTE: "nobody who is local here wanted a hockey team,we were happy with, and still happy with the college basketball here."

While I am a huge college basketball fan, I know lots of locals who love the hockey team. I think it's a great example of what I was looking for.

Yeah, Bob. What were you thinking?

nobody who is local here wanted a hockey team,we were happy with, and still happy with the college basketball here.

i have nothing intelligent to add to this blog...Hey Everybody !!!

on a positive note, a professional sports teams relocation to Raleigh is a result of the growth and has brought the first professional championship to NC.

I too was born in the old Rex. I'm not an Arts person and my job was not created as a result of, or part of, the growth. I can't, in all honesty, think of any benefits that I have seen. That doesn't mean that there are none, just none that stand out directly. I personally have no problem with living in an uneducated cowtown.

I, too, am a born and bred Raleigh girl. (Old Rex and all) I was raised not too far from 5 points. I think progress is good, but what some folks call progress is not what most natives would call it. Some of the houses going in now are way too big with no yard whatsoever. They have driven up the prices on all houses in the area so that folks that wanted to move into Raleigh for the quaint single family bungalows have no choice but to pay $900,000 for a 750sq ft house. The houses do not fit the landscape of the neighborhoods around them. Why move to an area b/c you like it just to change it in the extreme. I love the old neighborhoods with the cute houses and sprawling yards. That is the best thing about Raleigh. It has character. :-)

Have to agree with you Laura, Bob is just trying to stir up trouble...I welcome anyone that wants to come enjoy the South. We are welcoming people that don't mind you coming to join us, just don't try to change us into what you left behind. It's getting harder and harder to find that "southern" charm in Raleigh. Used to be places like the Upstairs Restaurant- can I get an AMEN for the lawyer special!! Loved going to that place, genteel little old ladies and a step back in time to a place where if you came in to eat lunch by yourself, they put you at the "singles" table with the other single folks so you would have someone to chat with and enjoy your meal. Sorry...got off track and commented on something Raleigh has lost rather than what it has gained.

yea Bob. What Laura said. Besides if you take credit for all the 'wonderful' things about Raleigh then you have to take credit for all the things that aren't working so well. But that's for ANOTHER blog.
