things you can not say in child care
Published Aug. 27, 2008I learned something interesting in reviewing my assessment scores from my daycare rating scales. There are some things you are not supposed to say in daycare. If you do, you will not receive a high score in the area of "assisting children with learning appropriate language skills". I wanted to share those with you. (Seems I uttered 3 negatives during my assessment so I scored low in this area)
1. Don't put your feet on your sister. That's not nice. (I could have said like, let's see if we can put your feet in a more appropriate place than on your sister)
2. Don't play with your milk, please, you might spill it. (I could have said like, let's see if we can place our cup beside our plate gently while we eat our lunch)
3. (in response to one of my 4 year old's uttering the F word, I said, what did you say? and she repeated the word to which I replied ) We don't use that word at Mrs. Angela's. That is NOT a nice word (and I used a very firm voice according to the rater). What I should have said was something along the lines of, let's see if we can find a nicer word to use (and used a much more pleasant voice)
According to my consultant, ANY use of a negative would have resulted in a score no higher than 2 in this category.
NOTE: Out of 38 categories that I was scored in, with a possible high score of 7 overall, I scored a 5,67. Enough to earn me a 5 Star Rated License. So I was very excited. However, I wanted to share this with all parents so YOU are aware that it is VERY detrimental to your child's development to use negatives and YOU as parents need to be aware of this and always strive to turn your negatives into positives.
(and, in my most humble opinion, this is why our prisons are full)
BTW,,those are not my daycare children,,that is a stock photo

But geeesh... our kids need to hear NO... and That's NOT nice (or appropriate)!!!!
I'm all about not trying to be so negative that it beats the kid down in the dirt... but I won't hesitate to tell me kids - "I don't like what you're doing" - "doing" being the operative word... and in the same sentence let them know that they are smart/kind enough to make a better choice.
I was suprised that they commented on your tone of voice... that's the first thing that my kids respond to even today.
Regardless of what they dinged you on - sounds like you're doing a FANTASTIC job!

Yes, I would, and I did do that once. The parent tried all kinds of things to weasel out of the responsibility for the word, and even called me several times during the evening to beg to bring her child back, but I wouldn't give in. I had the rest of the children to think about.
I don't know if I taught that kid anything, but I know his mommy learned a lesson.
God bless.

NOT displaying some well-placed well-worded negatives in a child's life leads them to grow up thinking everything will always be rosy and will always go their way.
Then when it doesn't, they aren't prepared for the reality they're going to have to live in.
And this is one of the reasons I'm retiring to PA instead of staying in NC. DHSS and CPS here aren't worth the powder it would take to blow them up.
Plus, PA has wonderful state-shared benefits for the elderly.
God bless.
