help me!

Published Aug. 26, 2008

I'm home with my sick child.  He has a bacterial lung infection and an ear infection.  Other than antibiotics and pain relievers along with his nebulizer treatments, how can I make him more comfortable?  Any ideas?

Looks like you got it covered. Hope he can rest so that you can too. Hang in there.

my mother-in-law swears by a sauteed onion plaster. It smells terrible. but does seem to work the infection out. The onions have to be warm and transparent and placed on a dish towel you intend to throw out afterward. However, I doubt you could convince a 2 year old to put this on his chest. I'd go with the humidifier.

Mom, take it easy tonight. With those drugs in him, he should be able to sleep fine tonight; keep him home from school to monitor him and then its off to school the day after!

hmmmm my son would like watching the same video over and over you poor thing. o i would let him fall asleep anywhere he does....of course you....get to sleep there too....i have slept on the floor next to his crib and even when he was old enough to have his wisdom teeth removed....he had a bad reaction to the stuff and puked nearly the entire evening....here he was at 18 or so and i was sleeping on the floor next to his bed...so you are on the first steps but they are the great steps....you will make it...you dont even have to make it looking good.....you just have to make it...we are do the best we can....

Yes, bacterial infections are serious I spent a week in JMH two years ago with it. Let's hope the antibiotics work she started him on today.

getting albuterol via a nebulizer every 4 hours for 24 hours. 3.

Can't get any better than that. I do hope that he will get better. I have been where you are many a night and I do hope thaings will get better.

poor baby..sometimes only thing you can do is love him thru it....poor baby...i feel for him and for you...i know you would much rather suffer a 1000 times than watch him go thru this.

PS bob the train or whatever...he has an ear infection he probably cant hear well right now and when you read to him it scared him....just hold him when he wants to be held and listen to him cry...toughen up mom, any of your friends got any valiums? lol

1. The peditrician has ok'd giving him Tylenol for the fever. He will get the minimum amount (I don't like giving my children medications - it makes them lethargic). I have given him a room temperature bath and letting him lay around in his Lightening McQueen pull-ups to keep him cool which is pretty effective in lieu of giving him more medication. 2. Peditrician has nixed Vicks - he's getting albuterol via a nebulizer every 4 hours for 24 hours. 3. Hubby is at work. One of us has to stay sane in this wild house. 4. I'm mobile - I'm using a laptop. We are currently curled up on the couch switching back and forth between Bob the Builder and Thomas the Train. I tried reading and he cried. 5. We're also eating juice pops. I think they're helping with the fever as well. 6. I took him to the peditrician today - was there from 4:15 to after 6pm.

Yes, but bacterial infections are different form the common cold or a simple virus. I would ask the doctor before using Vaporub.

sassy it's a plaster you are NOT putting the vicks on the direct skin nor are you eating it although I ate plenty as a kid and it didn't hurt me. The warmth from your body creates a humidified effect. Like people who use humidifiers with vapor drops for it. You put it on when you put the kid to bed so when he's under the sheet that also helps warm up the salve that is put between the cloth. The cloth is touching the skin and the other side is touching the t shirt or pj's. My son grew up in the mid seventies and 80's and he is still doing that on severe spells he has at times now and his doctor has never told him to stop. I will make sure I ask my doc when I see him again. But it has saved many of my families from stuffy kids trying to breathe at night and my friends families as well...I guess it's called po man remedy......
