durham dwellers: what's the biggest misconception about your city?

by Golo Managing Editor
Published Aug. 26, 2008

Let's face it, some cities get a bad rap, even when it may not be 100% deserved.

As with most large cities that draw a lot of attention due to crime rates, there are many areas within the city that are thriving and where good people are living their lives, raising their families and enjoying their surroundings.

The characterization is often unfair, and residents are too often on the defensive.

So, Durham residents, or former residents...what in your opinion is the biggest misconception about your city?

I live in Apex now, but lived in Durham for more than 15 years, and I really miss it. I miss being able to go to the ball park as often as I used to. I miss hanging around on Ninth Street. I miss the Museum of Life and Science. I miss the Durham ambience.

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy a house in Durham.

The crime thing has already been covered.

My biggest misconception before moving there was the impact of Duke University. There is none. With all that the school could do to positively affect the community--it chooses not to. The administration seems content to live within its walls. You rarely see the students anywhere downtown, and most of the locals are State and Carolina fans.

Lol @ dreamin! Thats all right girl! It's ok to do a little loving once in awhile!

68-.. I know. I have 2 brothers that still live in Rougemont. So I'm there often. It's really starting to grow up in some areas. But, I went to Durham county schools up until I finished the 6th grade. (Mangum & Little River) The schools were great, and my chilhood was great.

Durham is for people not from around here. Otherwise, they would not live there.

A lot of folks are shocked to find out how many extremely high-income areas there are in Durham (Treyburn, Croasdaile, Forest Hills, and Hope Valley)- there is a lot of money in this town. (Not saying that is good or bad, just not the perception). I think perceptions are fueled by the eastern and northern gateways to the city (highway 70, area around 85 in N Durham, and eastern durham via 147) - sketchiest parts of town are also the access points from Raleigh, so I can understand how the impression forms.

FWIW, I love Durham - it has awesome restaurants, nice parks, and cool people - its been a good place to raise our kids so far, and it doesn't feel as "manufactured" as some of the more bland towns in the triangle (and I was born in Raleigh, which I also like, but not as much as Durham)

I've been taking Amtrak lately to see my son in Greensboro, and I can't wait for the new "mixed station" to open.

there are certain areas of Durham that are bad but that only makes about 5% of the city. Downtown Durham is great with lots of good restaurants, bars, trendy shops, etc. The Tobacco Complex is fantastic. The east side of downtown, along Alston Ave from 147 up to Geer is a fairly sketchy. Around NCCU is bit interesting too but the rest of the city is beautiful. I think Durham is prettier than Raleigh.

Rougemont is still nice con amor.

I hear WAY more bad stuff in the news about Fayetville than Durham.

I grew up in Durham county (Rougemont) and I lived a nice safe childhood.

If we want people to visit Durham we've got to get the word out about the museum of life and science. I've been to all the museums in Raliegh, they just can't compare in terms of a great place to take kids. The zoo portion is great, the remote control sail boats in the catch the wind exhibit is awesome and so many of the exhibits are interactive.
