durham dwellers: what's the biggest misconception about your city?
by Golo Managing EditorPublished Aug. 26, 2008
Let's face it, some cities get a bad rap, even when it may not be 100% deserved.
As with most large cities that draw a lot of attention due to crime rates, there are many areas within the city that are thriving and where good people are living their lives, raising their families and enjoying their surroundings.
The characterization is often unfair, and residents are too often on the defensive.
So, Durham residents, or former residents...what in your opinion is the biggest misconception about your city?

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy a house in Durham.

My biggest misconception before moving there was the impact of Duke University. There is none. With all that the school could do to positively affect the community--it chooses not to. The administration seems content to live within its walls. You rarely see the students anywhere downtown, and most of the locals are State and Carolina fans.

68-.. I know. I have 2 brothers that still live in Rougemont. So I'm there often. It's really starting to grow up in some areas. But, I went to Durham county schools up until I finished the 6th grade. (Mangum & Little River) The schools were great, and my chilhood was great.

FWIW, I love Durham - it has awesome restaurants, nice parks, and cool people - its been a good place to raise our kids so far, and it doesn't feel as "manufactured" as some of the more bland towns in the triangle (and I was born in Raleigh, which I also like, but not as much as Durham)

I grew up in Durham county (Rougemont) and I lived a nice safe childhood.
