first day of school nerves

by NCTeacher
Published Aug. 22, 2008

First, let me give you a little backgroud. I am still a fairly new teacher- 3 years. But I have worked with kids for many years- daycare, after school programs, volunteering at local schools, etc... So I am used to dealing with kids and feel very confident about that part of teaching.

But our first day of school is Monday and my nerves are shot already. I feel more confident this year than I have in previous years at the beginning of school. I know more about what to expect and how to handle my class from the very beginning. I am just SO nervous about the first day of school. It is really overwhelming me right now.

So my question to you all is this: Do those first day of school nerves ever go away? Do you start off every school year nervous?

I'm not really nervous, excited is a better descriptor. My room is ready, I have lesson plans and back-up plans, and 5 (yes 5) Diet Mt. Dews in my office.

Hope everyone has a great first day!

I despise open house. I have taught for many years and I think I am still a little nervous the first day. Usually I have a bad dream that everything goes wrong the first day of school, sometime before that but it doesn't happen. Good luck!

You know, I'm never nervous on the first day of school. However, I'm a wreck on Open House Night. I'm always nauseous that whole day even though those two hours are always a complete blur when it's finally over. The only thing I fear on the first day is getting them home the right way. Once you get 700 children in the hallway and out to the bus parking lot, they end up blending together. No matter what you do, you can't see all 20 something of them at the same time. That's what I'm nervous about!

Meeting new people can be nerve wracking, especially about 30 of them that you have to watch 7 hours a day! I think with a few more weeks, you will be ok. You are probably just wondering how the year will go or if you are prepared for everything. The answer is no, you can never be prepared for everything that can happen, but you can try and do your best. This is how I have survived the school system. Just show up with a game plan and a backup plan.

peaceout -- I always have those dreams, too, but I have them in the summer. I hate the dream where I am giving instructions and NO ONE will listen to me. (it sort of reminds me of faculty meetings)

My first "first day" was way back in 1988. I always look forward to meeting my students. I wouldn't say that I feel nervous --just anticipating what the year will bring! :-)

yeah...after 17 years I still have those crazy dreams the night before...classroom is not set up, kids not listening to me, late to work on the 1st day, etc. It gets better...have a great school year! We start on Monday in JoCo too!

Just take a big swig of Black Jack right before you go to school and everything will be ok.

Good Luck on a new year. It is quite an honorable profession that we are in. I tell my kids each year that I have been school every year of my life except the first 5, and that each year I still get the first day jitters. I have been teaching for 16 years, and was in school 17 years prior to that, and I have NEVER slept the night before the first day of school.

It gets better, but it never goes away....

Hope you have a GREAT school year....

I still get nervous after 17 years. But, it is not as bad as the early years. Hang in there, and remember, enjoy them while they are still a bit unsure of just how far they can push you! LOL! There is a great children's book, First Day Jitters, or maybe it is First Grade Jitters. Anyway, it is really cute and it turns out the book is about the teacher rather than a student!
