a bunch of hot air

I remember when a presidential candidate made a statement about how we can lower gas prices by properly inflating tires in all automobiles.  He was laughed at and mocked for making such a stupid, idiotic statement.  "Air isn't going to fix gas prices, you dummy, drilling will!"   Well, here's a pretty simple statistic for you, courtesy of the US Dept of Energy:

"Underinflated tires alone cost the country more than 3.5 million gallons of gasoline each day."

Wait, did that say 3.5 MILLION GALLONS PER DAY??? Actually, YES it did!  I'm certainly not in a position to attempt to prove or disprove that number.  Let's assume for a minute that the Dept of Energy stretched their numbers a little (how about 50%?)  So even after decreasing that number by 50% that gives us an additional 1.75 millions of gas a day - 12.25 Million a week - 638,750,000 gallons of gas a year.  Now, do you still think that wouldn't put a dent in the price of gas at the pump?

I've known about the bennies of proper tire inflation JUST about as long as I've been legal to climb behind the wheel of a vehicle.

And yes, on occasion I notice that my fuel economy seems a bit lower, and will frequently find that my tires are getting a little low.

For doubters, do your own experiment...

So glad I kept up with the "greenies" to understand the politics of energy conservation. Oh wait, that was the point, wasn't it? Conservation?! If only 10% of the people understood the concept and acted, got their tune-ups, tire inflation, etc, then in the long haul it would have a positive effect on the environment. I don't care what your politics are, but if that makes anyone just a bit more environmentally aware, even if they participate to save themselves $$ annually, then so it be, still a benefit. If we had a way to talk to an average "Joe or Jane" who hasn't realized the small things that can be done to help, and this is the only message that gets through, then shouldn't we take that as a small victory? We are supposed to be using this platform to teach energy awareness and conservation. I don't care who that message comes from, only who hears it and acts upon it. Dissect it to the letter, just make sure you've had YOUR tune-up and are doing your part.

(psst - T-man - face it dude, Obama was the one full of hot air. You can try to defend it if you want, but he was full of pure BS and anyone with any degree of intellectual honesty would admit it.)

Yes I am. I contend that by reflection of the behavior of our government (both state and federal) everytime revenue drops to them because the people are conserving one way or another, that the government will increase SOME type of tax or fee to cover the cost. Which long term - negates the savings you had from your conservation efforts.

What I was NOT saying was that the companies would increase fees. I was saying that the Gov't would. Economically in a business, the reduction in demand would reduce the price of the product.

But if I'm taking public transportation or carpooling that is also cutting down on demand which can reduce the price of gas because the price of oil per barrel would go down. But the government is loosing $$ in tax revenue. THEY WILL MAKE UP FOR IT!

"There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. ... Making sure your tires are properly inflated - simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling - if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You'd actually save just as much." - Aug. 1 speech in Springfield, Mo.

Okay, T-man, you're right. I forgot about the "tune ups" as another prong of his energy plan.

You want to tell me how much that would save, especially since any car built in the past decade or so doesn't GET a tune up?

"Is it right to force them to Sell their SUVs and drive smaller cars? Is that the responisbility of the gov't?"

Absolutely not, and I have never so much as suggested it was!

sjmr1216 - as usualy someone can't read. That is not what I said. What I said was - you can't MAKE everyone do that, and for various reasons I also stated that can interfere, there fore, it negates those numbers. It doesn't mean they aren't valid. They are in fact very valid. But unless you can force every single individual - then they are in fact just numbers and nothing more.

umm tid, are you really suggesting that reducing demand for oil will RAISE prices???

"The problem was with Obama's claim that if we inflated our tires, we would save enough energy that we wouldn't need to drill for new oil."

Actually, he said that proper inflation was PART of a solution, not the entire solution. It does sound a lot better when it's pulled out of context and made to sound like that was his entire plan though.

T-man - your missing the whole point. 1st - what obama suggested would cause the price to go down at the pump. In fact, it would go up. Case in point. When we conserving water because of the drought... not enough money was made in both taxes and revenue. So they had to increase the fees - state gov't felt it, and is still considering what to increase to cover it.

So, if people got more mileage out of their cars, the demand drops, but taxes (which the states are already feeling through conservations and public transportation increases) on gas are down, so the state gov't will increase something to make up for that.

Obama's comment was more in tune with it would save money for the people. YEs it would - long term it wouldn't (because of above).

IF everyone who had SUV's drove cars with better mileage it would reduce demand. Is it right to force them to Sell their SUVs and drive smaller cars? Is that the responisbility of the gov't?
