Two local agencies are joining to make sure children from families in need are ready for the new school year.
The Pitt County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Parakletose Services Inc., a human services agency, are inviting families facing financial challenges to pick up vouchers for the new school uniforms required in all Pitt County schools this year.
The vouchers will be handed out at 6 p.m. Sunday at the NAACP mass meeting held in Mount Calvary Church.
“Our focus is on the ones that need help with the uniforms,” said Calvin Henderson, president of the NAACP branch. “There are some families experiencing some hardships.”
Henderson said his goal is to provide a total of 30 uniforms.
He said officials at the two agencies realized there was a need in the community when the schools' social work discretionary funds began running low. He said the vouchers are meant especially for the families who are residents at the local homeless shelter.
“It's good for our community to work hand-in-hand with our schools,” said Henderson, who made a presentation about this endeavor to the Pitt County Board of Education. “This is the time when the community could fill in that gap.”
Henderson said he hopes there will be some representation from the Pitt County School system and invited any other agencies to join them.
In addition to the NAACP and Parakletos Services, Henderson said anyone wanting to help donate can either come to the service or call him at 327-8092.
“This is our way of giving back to the community,” Henderson said.
