what's your earliest memory of the state fair?

I'll admit, I've only been to one North Carolina State Fair having only lived here for 18 months, but the Michigan State Fair brings back fond memories of time spent with my family.

I learned really quickly that the State Fair here is HUGE. People were uploading their images, taking off work, and even letting their kids miss school to attend! That told me right there that the North Carolina State Fair meant a lot, to the people who live here.

So what is it that you love most about the fair? And what is your earliest memory?

I remember hanging out on the wall by the Red Cross building, near the Midway, checking out cute boys. I rode the Enterprise, the Zipper, and Super Loop a lot. We would stand near the Super Loop and hear people's change, etc. fall from their pockets while they were upside down. I even worked out there one year at a cheesy game, but quit after a couple of days. I still had my pass, though, which allowed me to ride and park for free!

My earliest memory of the NC State Fair is when I was 7 or 8 years old, which would have been 1970 or '71. I remember my dad playing a game where you tossed quarters onto a large board with painted "Lucky Strike" cigarette packs on it. If your quarter landed fully within one of the red Lucky Strike circles, you won a 4' tall stuffed animal. We got a pink poodle. Later, my parents took me to see Joey Chitwood's Hell Drivers, which was a car stunt show at the grandstand, which was a dirt race track all the way around back then. One guy drove the whole distance up on two wheels. The highlight for me, though, was my dad allowing me to drive a go-kart on a little track located behind the big race track. My go-kart was light blue with a number 43 painted on the front, so I was "king" for maybe five minutes - but I'm 45 now and remember it like yesterday. Oh, and we ate foot-long hot dogs at Charlie Barefoot's. Although Charlie's gone now, his family carries on the tradition.

I have had many great memories from going to the State Fair. My funniest memory has to be from back in 1975. I had taken my younger brothers to the fair. That's when the free parking was really in a cow pasture. We had an absolutely great time. Rode the Himalaya, went to the haunted house, ate all the goodies of that era. Then it was time to go home. We got stuck in the mud in the cow pasture and then I got confused and took the wrong ramp to go to Capital boulevard and we found ourselves on the wrong side of the road. It was scarey but very funny. I'll never forget that experience.

My earliest memory of the state fair is when my mom and dad took me and my brother and my mom ended up losing her voice. Good times, good times.

I love the state fair. My daughter is 33 now but we still love the rides, the food, and everything about the fair. I have a new granddaughter born sept. 16th and I look forward to the state fair with her. I don't know if she'll go this year, but next year she'll be just at the right age to enjoy it. One of my fondest memories was the night I took my daughter to see Micheal Damian(it's been a long time hope I spelled his name right LOL) We had always gone to the fair in the daytime and the concert was on a fri. night I swore I'd never do that again and I haven't. But it was fun there were more old ladies screaming that than young girls because of his time on Young & Restless We never went to the state fair as kids and I have always tried to take my daughter even when money was tight. Actually her dad and I were divorced so she went twice LOL

I like to watch the cows and chickens and farm animals, and the food that growns in NC, just good memories. I also like the food and not the rides, i don't really get on any rides.

the super loop, the himalaya, the freak show(not the attendees, the paid freaks)and the laser light show back in 1978/1979........the laser light show was even better when you went in and all the weedheads were in there........wonder why?

i remember winning one of those stretched out coke bottles filled with green stuff. I ,to this day still have the exact bottle too, still filled with appears to be kinda green, kinda clear "something". I am so surprised i never lost or broke it but i still have it.

I love the friendly atmosphere. all the people... and the food that i cannot eat. I think i will try an emu burger this year if i go. i dont ride rides, but i love the freaks! and the exhibits. festival of yesteryear is cl. never seen a tractor pull tho want to

my earliest memory of the state fair is eating junk food, riding rides, and then going home and ralphing it all up...

I know, it's gross, but thats my first memory of the fair... LOL...
