*sniff sniff* having a mommy moment here.

Published Aug. 21, 2008

I just took my one and only (that's her in the pic) to "back to school night" tonight. She starts Kindergarten on Tuesday. It's amazing how time flew by.  I noticed that tonight my hubby and I were having to confront issues that are new to us.  For example, I am 100% against putting her on the school bus EVER. I am not from the area where we live now and I personally had a horific bus riding career. He was born and raised here in Moore County and says he feels that we are in one of the safest places in the state.  Therefore, hubby feels like the bus is a great learning experience and that we would be taking away from her by not allowing her to ride.  He also believes that if I drop her off in the morning that she is capable enough to walk the 50 ft to the classroom herself and that I could just drop her off and drive away. I just can't imagine allowing a 5/6 year old walk anywhere by themselves.  I know I probably sound like a very overprotective mom, but the truth is I am very laid back.  Whew. Who woulda thunk that starting Kindergarten would pose so many issues.

Take her and pick her up if you have that option. Missing out on the bus experience ain't missing much.

Maybe walk her in the first day but not any more, and not even the first day if she feels comfortable with it.

Most importantly, children pick up on adult energies. Be positive about all aspects of school. Encourage her to be independent and allow her to figure out things for herself. She will be a better person for it and you will have done her a great favor.

About picking up - - in years to come, don't leave the school area in the afternoon until your daughter has checked and made sure she has everything she needs to complete homework assignments. Our youngest daughter in the early years was the worlds worst for getting home and realizing she had left something at school that she needed. We learned to check before leaving the area.

Children are pretty sharp and catch on fast (too fast sometimes) allow her to become her own person.

JOO

but why waste gas if they can ride the bus ? carpools tie up traffic and spill into the roadway but if discipline is an issue with some of the other kids then maybe take her Click to view my profile WillowsWalk----

Most parents in carpool are dropping their kids off while on their way to work. In the afternoon, most are picking up while returning from work. So what's the difference?

If your school is like ours, there will be be teachers posted every 20 yards. We have a teacher open the car door. Another is there to open the door. Several more are in the hallway.

When my daughter (only child, too) was in kindergarten, she made it clear that I could only walk her to class on the first day. (I teach at her school.) The reason why? She liked to "race" down the hall with her friends to see who could get in the room first. The children didn't want parents to slow them down. :-)

My daughter started Kindergarten in July...and although she is my second that I have sent to school, it was still very emotional...she is my only daughter...She had a hard time going to school for the first week, too...she has never been to daycare before...I like that she rides the bus. She has made a lot of friends with the neighborhood kids, friends that would have never existed if not for the school bus

Honey, I am so feeling your anguish. When Gabby had to start last year I was so upset at her school district and having to send my baby on a bus for over an hour - BY HERSELF - as if, HA! That I changed her school district where I had to car pool her in and pick her up. Worked great for both of us, she got to walk 50ft by herself, and I got to breath again knowing she was safe and sound at school.

Now, the first day was also a dozy! LOL. No I did not cry in front of her in class, but YES I did choke up, and couldn't talk for a moment. I know how fast they grow after starting school and I felt like I was giving up my baby to become a little girl. Sigh...I was, but I was digging my heels in all the way! LOL.

Anywho...I'm better now, not much, but some.....

Now this 3 yr old, Lord, point me to the bus, bike, skateboard anything....

I know how you feel. I am sending my baby to HIGH SCHOOL!

The buses are still statistically (sp ?)the safest way to go to school. The area you live in is very safe and has a great track record. Let your darling try the bus, and then follow her lead. She will let you know if she is uncomfortable.

As for walking her in the school, most schools have policies on that now. In our district, everyone is welcome to on the 1st day of the year. Kindergarten parents may for the first week as well as parents of new students, but they must sign in at the office first. This is done for safety reasons. When you have as many as 100 adults moving in the hallways, it is very difficult for staff to be aware of potential problems. Sadly, in the US, there have been instances of parents abusing other children while they were at their child's school. By limiting traffic and requiring sign in, we are better aware of who is in the building.

I say take her and pick her up. What a blessing that you are able to do so..

I felt the same way Halyard. My mom could have very well taken me to school in the mornings but instead I had to walk a half mile to the bus stop at 6:15 in the morning rain/sleet/shine or snow. I thought it was quite selfish myself.

If you can take her and pick her up....by all means, do it! You'll not be sorry, I felt my parents had thrown me to wolves when I rode the bus. Thankfully, things were diff then.....too much bullying going on today.

I don't know willow, I kinda always thought of the bus as an alternative if you couldn't get your children to school on your own.
