Hi there Bull City Boosters:

Here's a press release I thought you'd find interesting.

Durham Hosts Community Meetings to Share Neighborhood Streetscape Design Concepts

City Will Present Preliminary Designs for Five Neighborhood Commercial Corridors

Durham, N.C. – Durham residents who participated in neighborhood meetings to provide input on how the streetscapes in five neighborhood commercial corridors should appear will soon have their chance to review and provide further input on the initial design concepts.

The City of Durham’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and the Department of Public Works are hosting community meetings to reveal the initial streetscape design concepts to the neighborhoods, show what direction the project is moving toward, and seek additional input from residents and other stakeholders.

The project, funded by 2005 bond funds, will address streetscape designs for Fayetteville Street between N.C. Highway 147 and Homeland Avenue; East Main Street between Hood Street and Alston Avenue; the intersection of Angier Avenue and Driver Street; the intersection of North Mangum Street and Corporation Street; and West Chapel Hill Street between Kent Street and N.C. Highway 147.  Five community meetings to showcase the initial design concepts are scheduled as follows:

Fayetteville Street Project

Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville Street, Durham

Monday, September 8, 2008, at 6 p.m.

Angier Avenue and Driver Street Intersection Project

Angier Avenue Baptist Church, 2101 Angier Avenue, Durham

Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at 6 p.m.

North Mangum Street and Corporation Street Intersection Project

UDI Community Resource Center, 800 North Mangum Street, Durham

Monday, September 15, 2008, at 6 p.m.

East Main Street Project

Refiner's Fire Community Church, 1003 East Main Street, Durham

Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at 6 p.m.

West Chapel Hill Street Project

Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park, 1313 Halley Street, Durham

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at 6 p.m.

The City is continuing to work with consultants from EG&G, Inc. to develop the schematic designs for the projects.  Initial meetings were conducted in April 2008 with residents, businesses, and other stakeholders in each streetscape project area to gather input and provide opportunities to help determine the streetscape design.

For more information on these upcoming community meetings, contact EG&G, Inc. consultants Yasmin Fozard at (919) 682-2860, yfozard@aol.com; or Rod Garrison at (330) 379-2790, office@eggco.com
