by Brian ShraderPublished Aug. 20, 2008
From the DOT:
RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close one of two lanes on I-40 West between Exit 289 (Wade Avenue) and the Wade Avenue overpass beginning Friday, Aug. 22, at 9 p.m., until 6 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 24, weather permitting.
This closure is part of the ongoing project to rehabilitate a 12.9-mile section of I-440/I-40 from Exit 289 (Wade Avenue) to Exit 301 (I-440/I-40 split). Motorists can expect heavy delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during the lane closure.
On Sunday at 9 p.m., crews will resume nightly lane closures on I-40 between Exit 289 (Wade Avenue) and Exit 301 (I-440/I-40 split). There will be no weekday lane closures during construction; lanes will remain open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. While nighttime and/or weekend lane closures are in effect, at least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times.
Work on the $8.5 million project was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson and completion is set for August. All work is weather permitting. For more project information, please visit the project Web site at www.ncdot.org/projects/I40rehabilitation/.
NCDOT reminds motorists to stay alert and use alternate routes, when possible. The speed limit will be 55 miles per hour during lane closures and 65 mph at all other times. No parking allowed on the shoulder of I-40 through the construction zone. In addition, the “No Trucks in the Left Lane” restriction will be lifted. Plan ahead before driving by visiting the NCDOT Traveler Information Management Web site www.ncdot.org/traffictravel or call 511, the state’s toll-free travel information line for current travel conditions.
