house, dry wall nearing completion

For those who are interested, here's the latest progress on the house.

While we did change the outside appearance pretty drastically, our goal all along was to keep the inside looking and feeling as authentic as possible.  It is finally beginning to feel "real" again, now that dry wall is ALMOST all hung.  Now the house looks like a house inside as well as out.  No more skeletal walls we can look and walk through.  There are actual WALLS inside now!

We have a friend who has experience taping and mudding.  He spent Friday and Saturday at the house working on that while we were installing the water line from the road to the house.  We had a ditch witch to dig the trench, but we buried it by hand.  Every foot along that 800 foot path made me so thankful that I went to college and got a degree!  That is NOT a job I'd want to do for a living, I promise!  And let me be the first to say that those who do that job have my UTMOST RESPECT!!!!  Fortunately for us, the ground is very good soil or sand, very few rocks.

While I was at home recovering on Saturday, my husband and son went back to the house to connect the line under the house, and *** drum roll please *** install a toilet!!!!!  Just one, in the half bath, but it's like finding a treasure!  Until the county inspects the line and installs a meter, we can't hook up the water.  But we can take buckets of water out there and use that to flush!  Trust me!  This is WONDERFUL news!  No more mad dashes to the gas station or trips into the woods.  My husband and son think I've gone a tad daft b/c of my total excitement over this milestone, but my daughter is right there with me in the excitement factor!!!  ;-D

Meanwhile, during this wonderous event, my son decided to help our friend who was taping and mudding.  He asked to be shown how to mud and apparently is a natural at it and enjoys doing it.  So while we are finishing the last little bit of dry wall, he'll be mudding all the screws.

All in all, things are definitely continuing to move forward, slowly but surely!  We have managed to find a mutually acceptable solution to the one glitch we've encountered - the continuous headroom over the stairs.  I've included a picture of the solution in my image gallery.

There is also a picture of my 'wild idea' for the half bath (besides a working toilet of course).  For some reason (old wall studs or ceiling joists?), the hose for the vent couldn't be ducted through the wall.  We were going to have to block out a chase along one wall/ceiling to hide the duct.  I made the executive decision to create a tray ceiling effect, rather than just have one blocked-out section in the bathroom.  My father-in-law (a truly great person who showed a lot of patience with me), wasn't quite sure what I had in mind, but was willing to go along with me in creating the design.  I'm pleased to say it turned out rather nice, if I may say so myself!!!

Wow Rock...it has been coming a long way!!! I bet with each step you are ready to move in Huh??? They days of wondering how and worries are paying off *HUGS*

I'm very happy for you...getting closer!

You have worked long & hard on that house, not to mention the money that ya'll have poured into it. I know this is one project you are ready to finish. So when is move in day??

I can understand the joy of a toliet.

What a beautiful stairway!!

Wizard, to be completely honest, since we are doing the majority of the work ourselves, the cost hasn't been all that bad! I suppose that's why we ARE doing it ourselves. We wouldn't be able to afford to pay people to do what we find ourselves capable of doing. Just an example: we priced having someone install and finish the drywall. We were quoted between $10,000 - $17,000. We did it ourselves for materials cost of about $2500.

We hope to be in within 60 days, but we're not setting that in stone. We've tried that and it stressed us out trying to work to a schedule like that. So we just work as hard as we can, do as much as we can, as quickly as we can. And we'll be in as soon as we can! Hopefully, trim out won't take too long and we'll be in by Oct.

I love seeing the pictures you post of your house! It's so much fun to see it coming along. I LOVE the stairs! LOL!

Beth

It's looking good! It won't be as long as it has been

Thanks for the compliments on the stairs. They, in my opinion, are the essence and personality of the house. That's why we were crushed when the inspector told us to change them. We'd checked, prior to moving the house, to make sure they'd pass as is, b/c we didn't want to alter them. We went through the effort of numbering each picket and rail upstairs to ensure it would go back together correctly. I'm glad they were willing to work with us to reach a compromise that wouldn't affect the overall look of the stairs. I was really worried for a while about that. But I think we can dress that notch up w/some molding and it will be 'good as old!'

You have sure put some work and time into this house and it shows. It is looking beautiful.Praying for you to be in that house soon to enjoy and tike pride in all the work you have done. ((( Hugs))) Be proud of your self.
