back-to-school shopping: where do you draw the line?

If you have children heading back to school in a few weeks, it's likely that back-to-school shopping is on your agenda or you'll be financing this annual event.

I have young children so I make most of the choices, but I know that parents with teens don't have it nearly as easy I do.

So, where do you draw the line? Do you provide a set amount of money for clothing and let your child spend it how they please, or do you shop for bargains? Do you give in and buy all of the trendy designer clothes and $100+ sneakers?

Or, do you make them buy their own clothes? I remember working as a teenager so I could buy my own clothes becasue there were certain things my mother simply would not pay for.

How do you handle the pressure?

I don't buy anything trendy or designer unless it is at a deep discount. I'm fortunate because my kids don't care. LOL

I worry though, because I fear that my daughter will care one day. By then her eldest brother will be done with college and paying his own bills, and my middle child (also a boy) will be nearly headed to college. ;)

At thrift stores. PERIOD!!!

If it's good enough for me (and it is) it's good enough for them.

God bless.

I used to provide a set amount of money. They figured out real quickly that money goes a lot further if you buy things on sale. Thankfully I have two boys, so fashion wasn't the end of the world. Tennis shoes were though. They are both in college now. They work full-time during the summer and they have truly learned to stretch and respect a dollar.

Bring back school uniforms! That makes it so much easier....

I'm having this debate now with my 14 yo daughter. She wants Nike shocks that are near $100. I say no, her dad is more likely to cave in. My 10 yo son really could care less. I don't mind spending a little more on his shoes because he wears them every day. She only wears hers when she has to.

I think this problem would be quickly eradicated if the school district would implement an uniform policy. With the acknowledgement of a serious gang problem here in WCPSS it would work to correct that issue as well. And with all children in khakis and a blue or white shirt, it would prevent a lot of problems with haves and have nots in the classroom social setting.

I'm taking notes. This will be a big issue for me in the future...especially with 3 girls.

Oh lawpirate, I truly feel for you. I'm thankful I only have 1 girl. I don't think I could handle more. I'm in favor of uniforms, too. I work for a school that requires them, and they really do make a difference in the children's behavior.

I am buying for my brother. I always help my mom out. I draw the line at $35.00 dollar jeans and over $100.00 sneakers. I got 5 pair of jeans in the Mall for $100.00. I got four of them from Sears and they were only $78.00 total. I will not by designer clothes. I will get him name brand sneakers within reason.

yeah.... none of my kids have to wear off-brand shoes. I don't wear them, so I don't expect them to wear them. I'm not snooty or whatever, but cheap shoes make my feet hurt.

LOL
