what constitutes "cheap?"

Good morning GOLO.
We've had an interesting week with Tuesday's discussion about coupons and Wednesday's discussion about dollar stores. As I read through some of the comments, I noticed that several people mentioned that they were disappointed when they received gifts from the dollar store, or that they didn't give gifts from the dollar store...at least not to people they care about.
That wasn't the most popular opinion but it leads me to this: What makes a person "cheap?"
Is it based on your perception of what they "should" be able to afford?
And what makes you call a person a "cheapskate?"
Seems to me that it's quite the subjective term. Thoughts?

When I give gifts from the Dollar Tree, it's because I know the person will enjoy what I give. For teachers, it means I can give notepads, stickers, activity books, and other materials that will be beneficial to them in their classroom. And I can give more than if I went to another store. What makes that "cheap"? What makes a checkers game bought at the dollar tree for $1 any less than a checkers game purchased at Toys R Us for $20? It's checkers and played the exact same way. What makes a puzzle purchased for $1 at the dollar tree any less than a puzzle purchased somewhere else for 10 times the amount? Shopping at the Dollar Tree/Dollar Store does not make a person cheap nor the gift a poor choice. I've received very expensive gifts that I hated and inexpensive ones I've loved

Being cheap is when $ is your only consideration. Whether that be in the quality you choose for yourself or in how much you are willing to give as a gift or charity.
I admit, I tend to be cheap. I try not to be, I'll try a generic grocery item, but if it is not good I go back to the brand name. I give to charity straight out of my paycheck to make sure I do it.

I can afford it- but I CAN afford it only because I do try to save $$ in other areas where it doesn't matter. That's not being cheap in my opinion.
