house: kitchen is coming together

This is the one room in the house that we didn't see eye-to-eye! It wasn't that we disagreed (much), but just that I could see in my mind what I wanted. My husband just could not see it. Granted, my vision has changed since we began this project, but still, I could SEE it working out.
Part of the dilemma is that my husband didn't initially want to use the original cabinets. I think what he really thought was that I was 'settling' for the cabinets and not getting what I truly wanted. Well, I TRULY wanted to use the old cabinets-with those hinges and pulls. I find the end cabinets under the counter very charming (the hinges are on the bottom and they roll out at an angle. Old flour and sugar bins).
With the help of a very dear friend, we rearranged the cabinets and added new to match. The man where we keep our horses is a retired cabinet maker and he graciously offered to help us with the cabinets. I learned yesterday that these are the FIRST custom cabinets he's made since he retired over 15 yrs ago. I feel very honored!
Originally I wanted an island w/stove built in, but space was limited and we (I) decided that an island would be too cramped for my comfort. So we opted to cut the cabinets to accomodate a stove to the left of the sink w/microwave exhaust above. We are putting the dishwasher to the right of the sink. We were able to salvage the majority of the cabinets/drawers and added the new to match. With a fresh sanding and coat of paint, and new countertops, I think it will look like they were always this way.
The plan is to put the fridge against the brick chimney. We'll add a narrow cabinet beside it. Then there will be another narrow cabinet on the wall between the doors going from kitchen to living room and dining room (don't know if pic is included in gallery showing this location).
It was amazing to watch an artist at work. I thought building the cabinets would be more difficult and time consuming, but he had the new built in no time. It was the alterations to the original that took time and more mental effort. But he really did a beautiful job! This is a kitchen that I will be very proud to show off and one that I consider a very generous gift!

As for me, I collect carrousel horses. They are sprinkled all around my house. It does sound like we have very similar taste! :-D

For now, it IS the trash compactor. But give it a bit of time and it will miraculously become the dishwasher! Now if I could only find one that loads and unloads itself....
