question for the technically-inclinded goloers... need an external hard drive that i can plug into my router
Published Jul. 30, 2008Okay... I didn't wanna bogart Cleopatra's external hard drive blog, but I need advice.
I've not bought an external hard drive...ever. I could have my boyfriend tell me what to buy, but he always wants me to do my own research. ;)
So here I am, researchin'.
I need one that'll hook up to something BESIDES a computer. I want to use it as a network drive at home, to back up files (especially since my son seems to have a penchant for mucking up his computer [thank you, BitTorrent *rolls eyes*]).
Advice?
Oh... I want at least 500GB of space... would like larger.

I sure didn't climb that one at Wheaton! LOL
Although, I have climbed the stairs inside the Washington Monument before. ;)
Still, the average elevator is 180 feet. That's plenty of climb when it's 100 degrees outside.

That sounds pretty nice. My boyfriend is cataloging our DVDs right now, and he's using a 4TB Raid just on his main machine.
The setup is pretty nice, because it has swappable drives, and one drive dedicated to critical backup.
Me, I just wanna make sure I don't lose my iTunes.

That would be quite a "climb" if the escalators broke......

That's what we do. I made a project out of digitizing all of our CD's, combined it with my electronics music and put it all on a 2.4 TB network server (it stores video and 1/2 of my pictures too) which can play from any computer, including the one attached the to entertainment center. All of the physical CD's are in boxes, never to get damaged or lost.

There are a good number of metro stations in DC that seem like the elevators go on FOREVER. I remember having to walk UP one of those babies in July one year, many years go... and it was HOT out.
LOL
This picture was taken at one of 2 places... either it was at Smithsonian Station, or at Arlington Cemetery Station.
I like staying in Crystal City or at Pentagon Mall. It's nice there.
And the Metro stops RIGHT there at the hotel. If you stay at the right hotel in Crystal City, it's right UNDER the hotel. Nice if you have kids and don't want them having to walk outside at night.

Nope. I'm not insulted in the slightest. I'm sure I could figure it out if I wanted. I dabble in electronics... um... like, actual circuits on breadboards. ;)
But the question is... DO I wanna figure it out? Nope. Would my boyfriend do this for me? Yep. (He's a Systems Architect/Engineer by trade)... but would I ask him to? Nope. He's busy starting a new business. :)
So I need something simple, and it sounds like the NAS would do the trick. :)
