sweet dreams buffett
Published Jul. 30, 2008In August of 1993 my wife and I signed the paperwork to buy a new house. It would be ready in February. With my birthday coming up, my wife said I could get a dog for my present. We could housebreak it on the apartment carpet, instead of our new home. We went to the Wake County Animal Shelter when it was on Roger's Rd. Looking at all the dogs, none of them "seemed" like my dog. As I walked down the last row, I saw dogs in the first three or four pens, then nothing. I stopped about halfway down the row and debated whether to start back through the rows and pick one, or finish going down the row of empty pens. Since I was halfway down the row already, I decided to walk down the rest of the row and start narrowing down the dogs I thought I might like. In the second to the last pen on the row was the cutest fluffball of a puppy looking back at me. I knew she was my dog. I opened her pen, picked her up, took her to the desk and said "This is my dog." The desk person told me that shelter rules state I wasn't allowed to pick up the dog, a staff member had to do it. I reminded the person that "this is my dog". I can pick up my own dog. I paid the $50 ($25 was refunded when I got her fixed) and brought her home. I named her Buffett because I just returned from seeing Jimmy play, and couldn't get the songs out of my head. She was house/apartment-broke in a week. She had a sweet disposition, loved to play, and would lick the daylights out of you! In our new neighborhood, I had kids come to the door to ask if my dog could come out and play!
I had her put down today. While it broke my heart to do it, I'm at peace knowing she is in a better place, free of the pain she was suffering. I believe Will Rogers said it, and I agree, "If dogs don't go to heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they go." Sweet dreams Buffett; I'll see you later. We'll play.
