these parents are part of the problem
Published Jul. 28, 2008http://www.newsobserver.com/105/story/1155589.html
I read this is yesterdays NandO. The story made me scream. These parents should be ashamed that they allow their child to rule the house. I like video games as much as anybody else, but let's get real. Research has shown that at 16 years old the mind is not fully developed and rational decisons are not usually the strong suit. If you know these folks, please slap them for me. Well, don't hit them just tell them they need to be.

"I don't think he's ruling the house" - GoodVibrations
He might not be "ruling" the house but he's not far off. The parents say he only plays for a few hours every day yet sometimes he's still awake at 5 am playing. That's some serious denial going on there.

Me, I am glad that he's happier and more willing to do his homework and get an education... even if he DOES play Guitar Hero.

That aside, I also don't see why it matters whether they are doing the actual homeschooling or they are paying someone else to do it. In fact, I've known some who homeschooled their kids who were GROSSLY underqualified and SHOULD have paid someone else to do it.
I also fail to see why it matters or not whether this kid learns any sort of musical skills as a result of playing this game (which, by the way, none of my video game-loving kids WANTS to play at all... they'd rather start a band, but they are open-minded enough to see why some other kids might enjoy the game, and I applaud them for that!).
The kid wants to compete as a gamer, not as a rock star. Big difference.
Also, I don't know that his 'whining' is what made them let him stay home and be homeschooled and pursue a career in gaming. Perhaps they saw that he was miserable, and wanted to keep him from becoming a statistic?

And I wish that game WAS more like air guitaring -- I told my kids I should do pretty well because I've always rocked out playing air guitar and drums for that matter. well, I STINK at Guitar Hero. It was quite embarrasing! LOL!
