these parents are part of the problem

I read this is yesterdays NandO.  The story made me scream.  These parents should be ashamed that they allow their child to rule the house.  I like video games as much as anybody else, but let's get real.  Research has shown that at 16 years old the mind is not fully developed and rational decisons are not usually the strong suit.  If you know these folks, please slap them for me.  Well, don't hit them just tell them they need to be.

He may be fighting at the mall to be the first one to buy Guitar Hero 65.

Well at least he won't be at the Mall starting fights.

Somehow I see this kid 20 years from now still at his parents house playing an X-Box 1000 and a PS23.

must say, I applaud this family's ability to keep up with the times. There are actually a whole field full of careers related to this young man's talents. Nothing I would be interested in pursuing, but I think they all deserve an "attaboy" for flexibility and forward thinking, and to this boy for his skill and dedication.

Why get so upset about this. At least he isn't at the Mall running with a gang and getting arrested. My 21 year old son who works for a company that builds custom computers and repairs other computers finally had all the school he could take at age 16. He went to the community college, took the pre GED one day, went back the next day and took the GED and got the scholarship for the highest score on the GED for the year. He has gone on to college for computers and he lives on his own, in his own house with his own car and takes care of himself. He was a video junkie, got his first Nintendo at age 2. Loves to read and before you decide he is a fat, sloppy boy, he weighs about 140 pounds and is 5'7" so nope it hasn't made him fat. The kid is this article is being homeschooled. I happen to agree that you can't do "one size fits all" parenting. Each child has a different personality and I think what they are doing best suits their son. More power to them.

"We couldn't take the complaining anymore," says Hunter. "He always told me that he thought school was a waste of time."

"I don't think he's ruling the house" - GoodVibrations

He might not be "ruling" the house but he's not far off. The parents say he only plays for a few hours every day yet sometimes he's still awake at 5 am playing. That's some serious denial going on there.

Irony is, many of the complainers would be all griping about how the parents went wrong if the kid stayed in school, had low grades, and eventually fell in with the wrong crowd and or maybe became another school shooter one day (okay, that's dramatic, but there are many other missteps along the way).

Me, I am glad that he's happier and more willing to do his homework and get an education... even if he DOES play Guitar Hero.

I'm sorry, but I don't see what relevance toddlers have to this discussion.

That aside, I also don't see why it matters whether they are doing the actual homeschooling or they are paying someone else to do it. In fact, I've known some who homeschooled their kids who were GROSSLY underqualified and SHOULD have paid someone else to do it.

I also fail to see why it matters or not whether this kid learns any sort of musical skills as a result of playing this game (which, by the way, none of my video game-loving kids WANTS to play at all... they'd rather start a band, but they are open-minded enough to see why some other kids might enjoy the game, and I applaud them for that!).

The kid wants to compete as a gamer, not as a rock star. Big difference.

Also, I don't know that his 'whining' is what made them let him stay home and be homeschooled and pursue a career in gaming. Perhaps they saw that he was miserable, and wanted to keep him from becoming a statistic?

I just didn't get that from reading the article. He's competing, he's winning -- and he's finishing at least highschool.

And I wish that game WAS more like air guitaring -- I told my kids I should do pretty well because I've always rocked out playing air guitar and drums for that matter. well, I STINK at Guitar Hero. It was quite embarrasing! LOL!

I think more important than his academic education is a question of his life experience. If he learns that if he whines enough he can get his way, then I feel sorry for him. If he learns that he can manipulate mom and dad, then I don't hold out much hope for him. The parent's argument that parents of children with special talents do this all the time, I would look at the statistics. Very few high school football players make it to the pros. I would imagine that a smaller percentage of video gamers can make a living. Do what's best for the child, not what is more convenient!
