europe has an economics lesson for obama

Published Jul. 25, 2008

I thought this was a very well written opinion piece out of the Wall Street Journal.  Pretty much dead on of things I have been saying all together.

YOU CAN'T Tax Corporations to Death then complain that they are leaving.  Eruope got that message a long time ago. So why haven't we learned from it? Many liberals want us to be like Europe, but why the exclusion of this lesson?

I really hope you'll take the time to read this opinion piece. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

No this piece isn't going to bash Obama. But he does mention one point that I think is the fear of most swing voters and independents. Obama touts "change change change, unify, come together". But once he's in office, will that really be the rally cry? Or will he go back to the super ultra left agenda he's been supporting up till now. But that is true of any politician. Not just Obama

"Just how strong are European countries economically??"

Very ... The EU economy just about equals, and if I'm not mistaken recently eclipsed, the US economy. They've got their act together when it comes to fiscal policy.

This is my favorite line from the article:

"They have also come to the recognition that the task of center-left governments is to minimize the negative externalities of market action while using government to more equitably distribute the resulting economic gains."

This addresses what most centrists want from government, insomuch as it is capable of providing it. Obama, when the smoke clears, is more likely to embrace a centrist position than the ultra-liberal one so feared by the right.

Tid - I think most people just look at stuff in a very surface kind of way, decide that it is good or bad, and then move on. Take Obama's proposal for Social Security. Should that idea get imposed it will remove a tremendous amount of money from private pockets to government pockets. I doubt that many people really think about what that actually means. The proposal that Bush floated, should have been debated and analyzed in a non-judgmental way. Instead it was attacked and squashed. So the current system continued, one that is going under and one that the politicians have lied about for decades. Even now, more money is flowing in than is being paid out. What should be happening is the extra should be staying in the trust fund to pay for the IOUs so that it is gaining cash instead of becoming additional debt. Instead Congress pays the current recipients and then spends the rest on other programs. On top of that they are mis-representing just how bad it is.

dwntwnboy - you posted in the wrong blog. The blog you want is the one asking your opinion on the appropriateness of Obaman's Euopean travels.

This blog is not about that. It is about economics

*sigh*

McCain gave a speech to the citizens of Canada too. Guess he should stay home and address the people of the US. Let's be serious, he didn't "say" anything in that speech, it was a kum-bi-yah photo op moment that win or lose the election, it's got to boost your self confidence to draw in a couple hundred thousand people and you aren't even president. McCain had his photo op moment in front of him Thursday and decided to cancel so he could shmooze some German Far-fig-nu-gan himself. He could have had the dramatic helicopter landing on an oil platform and talked about energy...instead, he talked to 20 people on the cheese isle of a German deli and then got some creme puffs. The chance to one up Obama was right in his hands, right there, in front of him and he let it slip away. Bigger news-----A- Candidate gives speech in another country, says nothing or B- Candidate has dramatic landing and talks energy.

Ok, clearly no one is even bothing to read the article. I'm rather sad. I don't know why I bother. You know other countries have learned something from us then turned around and made some things better. This arctile talks about one of those things specifically using the markets. I found it to be impressive, but it is something I've been following for a while.

I've seen so many people complain about high gas prices, high food prices, unemployement, outsourcing..... and there is a way to fix it. It's NOT the way the current crop of politicians would suggest. Europeans have figured it out... I see no reason we can't learn some things from them.

If they can take our process and make it better.... why wouldn't we want to learn from that?

Does Obama really want the US to be like Europe?? And the followers are so dumb they don't know what that means?? Just how strong are European countries economically?? How good is their healthcare?? If you think it's good, try getting a simple procedure done and let me know how you feel while you're waiting over a month for the procedure that would be scheduled within the week in America.

Sorry my spelling was poor meh2, but that's all you have to offer? Criticism of my spelling?

They are "Colombians", not "Columbians".

And no one can ever critize Dear Leader, even though he is a just a corrupt Chicago politician. PBUH...
