grilles and bumpers

Published Jul. 24, 2008

Compare cars today with cars of yesterday and the first thing you see will be the massive shiny chrome grilles and bumpers. Today, you have to look for a logo on some cars or you can't tell what kind they are, and one year looks like another for years in a row.

People in small towns and out in the country side knew one another by their cars. Take a look at these grilles, and smile.

The first grille was from a 1957 Caddy...Milky wins with the 54 caddy call.

Dayum Sessy got the 57 grille right...a la the name of the 57 Grille in Garner

the 2nd grille was from a classic Rolls Royce, of course,

and of course, MILKY wins again, knows the year, 1936, and adds it's a 1936  Rolls Royce Phantom model. I didn't know that. But it is a true classic look. To me, that is a car!

Want to comment on this 3rd one? It's an infamous one...

It was the first year of Ford's great loser, the 1958 Edsel. Mogwai wins.  I remember going to another county to see one before they came out. Push button transmission located on the steering column. Ford made it one more year, and gave up.

The 4th one, and last one since I'll be off the page, is another classic...one that holds up today as a luxuary car, if well kept, it's a ...

Daimler Benz kept that "style" grill for YEARS. I had an 81 "bucktooth" hood (had to remember you couldn't back out or you'd clip your head on the grill).

"I'm impressed with the car knowledge of Mogwai and Milky."

Don't be too impressed. I have to admit that Wikipedia is my friend. :-D

this is a 53 without bumpers...

I'm impressed with the car knowledge of Mogwai and Milky.

I think the 1953 might be a mislabel...

It was listed as a 1953...Mercedes of course...don't know the model.

Drilling it down a little. Going off of the trim, it's most likely a 1952 or 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S

The photo identifies it as a 300S. That is the W186 body, which wasn't produced after 1958. They switched to the W112 for the 1961 model year, and it's an entirely different looking car.

220SE?

I'm going to call it as a 1951-1958 Mercedes-Benz 300S
