HFCS is a lot cheaper than cane syrup. It may only amount to a fraction of a penny per can of regular soda, but multiply that by the number of cans of soda Coca Cola or Pepsi manufacture a year for the American market...probably tens if not a hundred million...and the savings (profits) add up.
One of the simple pleasures of a trip to Mexico or South America is a six-ounce Coca Cola manufactured to it's second recipe (no cocaine) with real cane sugar. They taste a lot better.
