multiple wedding dresses?

by Golo Managing Editor
Published Jul. 24, 2008

Good afternoon GOLO:

I received an e-mail inquiry today from someone who is working on a story about women who have worn or plan to wear two or more wedding dresses from different cultural traditions, such as a Western-style white dress and an Indian bridal Sari.

I thought that was very interesting. Is anyone celebrating several cultures and planning to do something along those lines?

My husband and I did "jump the broom" at our wedding reception to honor ancestors who took part in this ritual when they were not allowed to "officially" marry. I'm sure our broom was much nicer, and we certainly weren't out in a field somewhere, but our intentions were noble.

Any stories? Has anyone been to a wedding where multiple cultures were represented?

This was all done in Miami. Beautiful place. :)

My husband is Chinese/Jamaican/Indian and I am American. Our wedding mixed heritages slightly, but most was done traditional American. For instance, my wedding cake was a Jamaican Rum Cake, which is very similar to our Christmas Fruit Cake but so much better; it was moist and had a white cream cheese icing with marzipan flowerettes and designs on it. My wedding dress was the traditional wedding dress, but I rented it. The wedding was held in my brother in law's backyard near sunset by his pool, and his entire yard is like a tropical oasis. Palms, Crotons, Birds of Paradise, and assorted other tropical plants. We didn't do the electric slide, but instead my other brother in law and his partner; both DJ's on the side, played the music and my daughter sang during the ceremony 3 different songs for each part of the vows. Our preacher was a Cuban minister who also has gospel CD's out. My husband's family is huge! At least 80 of them attended. We had traditional Jamaican cuisine.

When my husband and I got married we had both had traditional weddings in the past. We were going to the Magistrate but my daughter protested. So, we invited her softball team to be our "attendants" and we got married at the park at a double header softball game. We (me, hubby, team, the other parents) all wore our jerseys (blue and white), the girls held blue and white balloons and stood around us and the minister( in his suit) while we said our vows. After the "I do's" and the "pronounce you man and wife", the girls and their coach released the balloons from the pitcher's mound. The cake was made to look like a softball field and the bases had "Angels" on them. The team was the "Angels" and our invitations to the girls said "What could be better than Angels' Watching Over Us?" Now, that's redneck! But, it was fun and memorable!

I just had one dress. It cost enough money I was going to get my use out of it!

I just had a simple wedding - mixing traditions sounds nice.

In the book Learning to Bow by Bruce Feiler, he recounts his day at a Japanese wedding. The bride wore 4 dresses by the end of the day. (The chapter is pretty hilarious, too.)

The hotel where we stayed in China had a wedding reception where the bride wore a white gown. We learned that she had a red traditional dress that she had worn earlier in the day. At the reception, the bride and groom stood in front of this large balloon arch and took red envelops (cash inside) from each guest. Then the bride would hand the male guest a cigarette and light it. If my tour guide was right, it was a gesture to wish one good luck. The guests came in wearing everything from shorts and sneakers to gowns and suits.

Most of the tailor shops in Vietnam would show both the red dresses and the white gowns in their windows. Having two dresses seemed to be the norm there.

I want a big redneck wedding!

hahahahaha!!! @ MILKY

My wife and I got married in Yosemite with no one there but the preacher and his wife. No invitations, no messy family arguments, no massive expenditures on a lavish ceremony. We'd both done that before and figured we'd keep it simple. When we got home, we just had a big party for everyone and rented out J&S Stables for the day. It was a blast and no pressures and no worries.

I am a male and I married a female. However, the wedding was done in the female cultural tradition with no beer and no televisions.
