imagine al-qaeda having access to these
Published Jul. 24, 2008These small nuclear weapons, called Davy Crocket, were developed and deployed in Europe by American troops from 1961 to 1971. A three man crew would use launch these into the advancing Soviet troop concentrations in order to give NATO forces sufficient time to mobilize. Over 2,100 of these weapons were produced and designed to be operated by three man crews of the "Atomic Battle Group" that would be scattered along the projected path of the invading Soviet forces.
With a range of 1.25 to 2.5 miles for the two different versions of the dimunitive weapon, the results would still have been impressive. "Even at a low yield setting, the M388 would produce an almost instantly lethal radiation dosage (in excess of 10,000 rem within 500 feet (150 m), and a probably fatal dose (around 600 rem) within a quarter mile (400 meters)."
Obviously these were battlefield tactical weapons, that had they been used, would have increased the possibility of larger strategic nuclear weapons being use in the conflict. The Soviets had similar weapons which were deployed by their forward military units in the European theatre.
Sometimes we just don't know how lucky we are that things didn't break down and devolve into the madness of nuclear war during the past helf century.
Imagine if the animals that even now are shooting our troops, and setting off IED's in an effort to kill as many as possible...imagine if those animals had access to these kinds of weapons.
Supposedly several suitcase nuclear weapons "disappeared" during the Soviet collapse. Where are these mini-nukes? Will we see them used against us, in that warzone, or even possibly over here, at home. The book and movie by the same title, "Sum of all Fears" has a scenario of a "lost" nuclear weapon being brought into the United States (very possible given our lack of secure borders) and detonated here. It could happen. Today, Tonight, Tomorrow. It could very well happen.

Isn't this the same guy they are demanding to release because he is JUST the driver and knows nothing? Yeah right!

To make ONE atomic bomb, they needed at least One Hundred Pounds of U235. And that took yet another huge building project to produce by August, two years later.
It's going to take one heck of an effort - and a lot of expertise - for terrorists to get their hands on a nuke.
Of course, I still have my Code Red Tom Ridge Duct Tape & Cover manual, just in case.
