what it was was pizza

Published Jul. 24, 2008

An older gentleman shared with me that while he was a student at UNC he and some friends were out at a restaurant in town and the waitress asked them if they would like to try what sounded like a piece of pie. He happily replied, “Sure, a piece a pie sounds good.” She returned and placed something on the table that widened some eyes and caused a few muttered gasps. He asked her, “Just what in the world is that?” She told him, “A Pizza pie.” He eyed it warily and passed on it. He said that at the time it looked to him like a giant biscuit someone had thrown up on. How times have changed!

I remember, "What it was, was Football" Does anyone else?

Definitely! A true classic. I sort of hacked the title because it fit and the old guy who told me this story attended UNC around the same time as Andy Griffith did.

ShellBell,

"It's great to hear stories from older folks... they really have seen some changes."

They are living history books. My grandmother live to be 103 and the changes she saw in her lifetime were truly amazing. Someday I hope to share some of her stories.

I remember, "What it was, was Football" with that funny looking little punkin, and the two fellas dressed convicts that come out on the field and commenced to odd-man right there, they did.

Does anyone else?

dj, I can relate. We did have pizza, but never fast food, and soft drinks did not come in the house. We ALWAYS ate dinner as a family and most of the time we all helped cook, and it wasn't that long ago!

djo - that sounds like child abuse...

"I never ate pizza until I was 20, never had fast food until I was 18, never had soft drinks at home until I moved out."

Well, welcome to the real world Forest Gump.

I never ate pizza until I was 20, never had fast food until I was 18, never had soft drinks at home until I moved out.

My grandmother relayed a similar story to me about her first encounter with pizza. She was in NYC and her friends were going out for what they called a tomato pie. That didn't sound like anything she would like, so she didn't go. It wasn't until later in the year she went and learned that tomato pie was pizza.

Funnny! It's great to hear stories from older folks... they really have seen some changes.

LOL yep I'll have a large garbage pie please,

Funny!
