linux advice, please

Given that I am utterly fed up with Windows, in any incarnation, I have decided to give Linux a try.

The box in question will not be my primary computer. I do, however, want it to do the following:

Serve as a network sharepoint for a printer that is physically attached to it.

Serve as a network file server for various media files (mp3, avi, etc.)

Have a GUI that I can use to manipulate it without having to delve into the arcane world of the command line whenever possible

One other Windows PC and several Macs will need to be able to access those resources over a LAN

1) Is this possible and 2) What Linux distro best meets the criteria given?

Thanks for any assistance!

Very possible - and a good call. Linux can support all those items you need. As for GUIs, you have your choice of several good ones. I'm sure someone here with fresher knowledge of the distros will suggest a good package. I have used Red Hat and Mandrake (now called Mandriva) in the past.

I'm using Ubuntu 7 and love it! The good thing about Linuz is the open-source program carry's a lot of built in add-on's that I think you will like, especially the GNOME CD burning program. The security I get from Ubuntu is absolutely phenominal. The draw back to Linux? Virtually everything out there is Win-Blows driven so you will have to download the drivers for your printer devices and piece meal them as well as tinker with modem set-up in the terminal portion of your system in order to connect to the web. Ubuntu has some really good tutorials if you get stuck. I run it on my desk top and ever since I have NEVER had a blue-screen, a freeze-up, a trojan or a virus.

To connect PC's to your Linux server, use Samba. There are plenty of GUI-driven choices for it.

Trublu, you will never have a "blue screen" in any *nix (Linux, BSD Unix, Unix, Solaris, AIX, HP/UX and OS/X being the most notable.) BSOD's are an NT-based kernel function. You can, however, have a kernel panic which is the functional equivilant. The classic one for Ubuntu is Parallels starting Ubuntu.

And who uses modems to connect to the internet anyway? As for drivers for modems, they are TTY devices and thus are brain-dead simple.

TruBlue is correct. I would go Ubuntu. There are hundreds of sites that will help with drivers and set up and trouble shooting.

You get to get close to your machine!!

If you want to go really funky, google "OSx86 Project " and torrent the files. Yep, it works, yes it does.

Dont know what your problem is-- I have 7 pcs on my home network using windows xp-pro and it works like a charm. I use Network Magic. From the other comments it seems that you going to have a lot of headaches setting them up and making them work. My advise is -- if it aint broken -- dont fix it.

"My advise is -- if it aint broken -- dont fix it."

It's broken ...

Arcane? Arcane? Command Line GOOODDDD GUI BADDDDD

Hang with what you know.

"Arcane? Arcane? Command Line GOOODDDD GUI BADDDDD"

Yes, arcane. To me a computer is a tool. I'm not interested in learning its inner workings or the minutiae of how it operates.

I simply want to be able to configure it to do what I want it to do with the least amount of effort necessary to accomplish it. Subsequently, I want it to perform those functions correctly and consistently without requiring a great deal of maintenance or tweaking on my part.
