Durham is just a short drive from a lot of places that are a criminal's dream because the residents would be so caught off guard. I remember a story not too long ago about Durham people coming over and burglarizing houses in the upscale Brier Creek neighborhood. They didn't realize building half-million dollar homes a stone's throw from gang-infested Durham projects was a bad idea.

My friend's sister was one of the robbery victims and the Durham police laughed at her when she asked them to come to her house to get her statement. They told her they would only meet her at the scene of the crime. She said that she hoped they would understand her reluctance to go back there and could they please come to her house and the Durham cops just laughed, says she. Can you imagine? What goes on over there?
