getting married? have you heard of the "5-people rule?"

GOLO member "TallWillow" brought up an interesting rule that I'd never heard before and wanted to share with anyone planning a wedding.

It's called the "5-People" rule, and it seems to me that adopting this rule could eliminate tons of stress.  If you haven't heard of it, read on. Here's how she explains it:

"I've come up with what I call the "5-people" rule. That is, to end up married, all you need is 5 people (plus the marriage license, of course.) They are: you, your fiancé, someone authorized to perform the ceremony and 2 witnesses. The person who conducts the ceremony doesn't have to be the one you planned on, and the witnesses can be any two adults off the street. Everything else is just icing on the cake and whatever goes wrong just makes a good story for later."

Anyone wish they'd know about this sooner?

I did this for my wedding. We did our family stuff for our 1 year anniversary. A lot less "bride stress" that way. A girl I went to high school with was downtown doing the same thing so her and her fiance were our witnesses and we were theirs.

Has worked for us since 1995. The sweetest minister, Mr. Ruth, who we asked at the last minute. A couple of friends. Then we all (except the minister!) left Raleigh and headed to the beach. A couple of months later, we took ourselves on a nice cruise. So far, so good!

There is absolutely nothing I need to learn from a European. People have free will. They can spend 50,000 on a wedding or spend 500 dollars like I did. Did not cost my parents a dime.

I will buy them a nice trip if my children wil elope. I will hold the ladder!

I wish Americans could learn from the Europeans:

* No need for a rehersal dinner * No need for flying the bridesmaids to Vegas * No extensive and expensive registry (our parents had a list of things we wanted, and the guests let the parents know what they were gonna buy. No need to registries at ten department stores) * No freaking out a year before the wedding because there SO much to do * No pastel colored bridesmaids dresses * No bridal showers * No $30,000+ bill

Europeans have weddings that don't bankrupt the couple and/or the parents. Wouldn't that be nice to have here?

All I had was five people and an intoxicated Justice of the Peace.

Having done all manner - small to huge - I choose the small ones as my favorite. But I tell all mine "As long as the two of you, a minister, the witnesses and God shows up - you are just as married". Has worked out so far!

That is the way I did it.... Magistrate, the intended, 2 witnesses and one was the custodian in the court house.

I never really got a big wedding. My first refused to go anywhere but to Dillon, SC. My second...well...my third...well...my last....well. OK, no more for me. O.o And here I was thinking I was just trying to get it right. :|

justice of the peace or magistrate, pulled two witnesses out of a restraunt in raleigh, and got married at the court house. best part was the reception other than making vows!! marriage last twelve years and the wedding wasn't what done it in!
