i need some advice
Published Jul. 23, 2008I don't mean to bring anyone down this morning, but I'm looking for some advice. Our cat is on her deathbed. She's 17 or 18 years old (our vet gave her to my wife 15 years ago). For the past few days she hasn't moved much. Yesterday my wife found her in the closet covered in feces. Last night I found her sitting on the side of the house after the rain. (We have pet doors that allow the animals to go outside. The dogs are restrained by the fence. The cats fit through the slats.) Since I brought her in, she's laid in her catbox. (Don't worry, it's clean!) She hasn't moved. This morning she's breathing, but not moving. Her eyes are open, but I'm not sure she's seeing anything. She doesn't appear to be in pain. My question is: Do I take her to the vet to end it, or allow nature to take it's course?

This is, as I advise everyone, a personal decision which must be made solely on the basis of what is best for the animal. It's difficult to let go of a beloved pet, but you can not allow that desire to hold on to the animal to put you in a position where her quality of life is suffering.
Consider the quality of life that your cat has now, and make the most humane decision you can with regard to what helps her not to suffer any longer than absolutely necessary.

Wow, I wouldn't have euthanized a talking cat. You could have taken him on the David Letterman show or had him on Animal Planet.

I say, take her to the vet and let him/her take care of things. We had to put our family dog down. She was very old and eaten up with cancer. She had stopped eating and drinking, and she had lost half her weight. It was time.
