what do you love about durham?

My Dad's side of the family comes from Durham, so all of the Durham Hate I see in the news is personally relevant. I definitely understand the concerns about their serious crime problem (it's why that whole side of the family moved elsewhere) but there are plenty of people who defend the city. So what keeps those people from moving away? What are some of the good points about Durham? Do you feel safe living, traveling, and raising a family in Durham? I want to know what life is really like there and I know I'm not going to get that from the news stories.
