The Great and Powerful KOS
In the course of political discourse here, I often see a disparaging comment made about where one bloggers thinks another blogger’s information comes from. Of course, we all know that none of us ONLY watch Fox News or read ONLY Michelle Malkin. Or, for that matter, ONLY watch CNN or ONLY read the NY Times for our information. But one source referred to in the listing of “You only read…” comments is the Daily Kos.
Daily Kos has been around for some time as an openly liberal web page. There is commentary on the day’s political news and world events from an openly left wing perspective. Kos has never attempted to appear otherwise.
It may surprise you to find out that in spite of the ‘legendary’ status of Kos among the left (and even among the right), there is a huge number of Democrats – liberals and progressives/moderates alike - who would like to give Markos (a.k.a. ‘Kos’) a big cup of STHU.
You see, during the primaries, Kos was certain it was a slam-dunk for Hillary. When the inevitable became clear, he began calling for her to drop out and became a rabid Obama supporter. In doing so, he angered many of his loyal readers. As he tried to defend himself, he fell into the old blogger’s trap of insulting and belittling those who criticize your opinion. This, along with his own self-delusions of political importance, led to a backlash that is rarely even mentioned in the right wing blogs or commentaries.
One of the leading bloggers in this ‘rebellion’ against him is Bartcop. Never heard of him? He’s been around for ages. He’s a centrist democrat, as opposed to a fringe left blogger. Bartcop was around on the old Prodigy network back in the 90’s when I was there. But, he was a ‘Prodigy Cop’ who made sure we all behaved on the boards and chat rooms. It was much later that he moved to IRC chat rooms and kept the nickname. From there, he became a blogger. He lives in Oklahoma, and really likes fine tequila.
Bartcop is no fan of Kos. Neither is he a fan of Pelosi or Reid. Yet, he’s a die-hard Democrat to the core. If you visit his web pages ( http:/www.bartcop.com ) you’ll see the usual bashes of the GOP, Republicans and the religious right that you’d expect. Yet, if you scroll down the pages and read the quotes and comments, you see that he’s just as adept at aiming his distaste for Democrats who talk liberal, criticize the Bush administration and then pass everything Bush puts before congress (like FISA, for example).
Here are a selection of quotes and comments by Bartcop from his recent posts. You may have to rethink just how much ‘influence’ the Great and Powerful Kos really has with the average liberal/moderate you meet online.
"Kos is the one person who Harold Ford could probably beat up. That those two nitwits are "leaders" of Democratic factions is sad testament to the decay of the party. Can't see how the netroots can claim victory when Obama is more centrist than the past two nominees and uncle Howard."
-- Swing Low, reporting from the Kos convention
(Bartcop) I think it was very gracious of Kos to agree to mingle with the little people.
After all, it only cost them what - $250 to be near Kos for a few hours?
"Oh good grief. Markos is preening again????? For God's sake...it was Markos who supported all those 2006 Blue Dogs who have now aligned themselves with Obama's YES vote on FISA, including Jim Webb and Claire McCaskill. They've all moved TOWARDS Harold Ford, and AWAY from the primadonna Kos. Basically, it was Markos who got played like a drum during the primaries. Obama doesn't give a rat's a$$ what Daily Kos says. Got that?"
-- Mary, reporting from the Kos convention
"There's a really huge misconception in the traditional media about who we are as a voting group. And I say 'traditional media,' not 'mainstream media,' because we are the mainstream… On issue after issue, we are where the American people reside."
-- multi-millionaire Kos, keeping his delusions of godhood in check - for the most part
"We're gonna get over it, because we have much more in common."
-- The Great and Powerful Kos, on Obama and that FISA vote
(Bartcop) Maybe Kos has a point. It was only the Fourth Amendment that got thrown away.
"The bigger our victories, the more bipartisanship you’ll see in the Congress."
-- Nancy Pelosi (D-Sellout)
(Bartcop) She's right. The more power she gets, the more she does what Bush wants.
Here, Bart comments on another liberal icon, Randi Rhodes:
Bart, you occasionally ponder why it is that certain impassioned Hillary supporters have trouble switching to Obama, in these post-primary months. I can answer that - Randi Rhodes.- Mary
(Bartcop) Has she been slamming Hillary again? Some Hillary haters got in the habit of slamming her and just can't stop, even if it continues to tear the party apart at a time when we need unity.
-->Smorg Says: Those of you on the right might do yourselves a favor and pay a visit to Bartcop every once in a while. He tries to update his site every other day. It is from him that you will get a more genuine view of how the left views their very own. Just skip the cartoons and well-labeled right wing bashing posts and you’ll be fine. :-)
