the dark knight delivers

So I finally saw “The Dark Knight” last night and the much-hyped film did deliver – even if it was about 30 minutes too long!

Yes it is Batman’s movie, but Heath Ledger’s “Joker” dazzles from the minute he hits the screen. Ledger is creepy, psychotic, comical and at times cartoonish in his portrayal of one of the most famous comic book villains of all time.

An Entertainment Weekly review described Ledger’s “Joker” voice as similar to comedian Al Franken – which is a pretty accurate comparison. His sing-song tone helps keep viewers uneasy.

Also the Joker loves telling everyone how he got the scars on his face – kind of like that old relative who loves to tell you about their gallbladder scar! Well the Joker’s explanations are just as cringe worthy.

Christian Bale’s “Batman” is similar to the first film – “Batman Begins” – brooding and gravely voiced. By the end of the movie, Bale is just about coughing out his lines.

For a good chunk of the movie Bruce Wayne pines away for Rachel Dawes (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal taking over the role from Katie Holmes), who is now the main squeeze of Gotham’s District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).

Gyllenhaal couldn’t really add too much to the role that was already too small to begin with. Eckhart was perfect as Dent but didn’t get enough time to develop his character fully as a villain. His eventual turn as “Two Face” seemed rushed.

The movie was two hours and 32 minutes of action, storyline development and at times – humor. At times the movie was a bit too much to take in.

Did anyone else see the movie yet? Is Health Ledger going to win an Academy Award for this role?

I really enjoyed it. I went to see it on Friday afternoon. ;)

The review here is pretty much spot on. Ledger's Joker is completely mesmerizing... I think my review on another site was "wow... just... wow".

I can see how he became overwhelmed with it, actually.

In the end, I found it quite sad. Not only that Ledger wound up dead at such a young age, but that it is likely they'll dredge up the Joker role, and fill it with someone who will not do it justice.

Aaron Eckhart's Two Face should be very interesting. I liked what little we did get to see in this film. I'm going to presume that he'll be the next villain up some sequel time.

As far as an Oscar for Heath Ledger, I just don't know.

Do I think he deserved one? Yep. Will he be nominated? Probably so.

I just don't know that he'll receive it, since posthumous Oscars are pretty rare.

Ledger is a wonderful actor! I couldn't believe this was him when i saw the previews, tho.

I have to agree....about 30 minutes longer than it needed to be. The next film was supposed to be another Batman/Joker storyline from what I heard- too bad, would have been fun. They could have left out the Two Face character all together and saved him for another movie, would have been a great set up for the next movie if they hadn't rushed it in this one to get in two criminals. 30 minutes too long and not nearly enough Joker....can't wait to see it on IMAX though- was sold out all weekend, by Friday morning.

i saw it sunday and loved it. i hate that Heath passed away and YES i think he deserves an Oscar

I know the old Batman movies were really bad, but if memory serves, didn't Jack Nickleson get many comments in the media about "stealing the show" as joker as well? They mess up the batman movies, but apparently they get the Joker roles - spot on

Heading out to IMAX next week to catch it..Two oldest kids so it already though. They refused to wait.. Both loved it, and yes we all agree here that Heath will get it. He's already been nominated once for a great movie. So sadly his passing and the earlier nomination makes him a clear choice.

*oldest kids saw it...DOH

Uh oh, did the Bat Man whoop up on his mom and sis? I heard this guy is quite gay, angry gay guy too it would seem.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,388124,00.html

Where did you get that Christian Bale is gay? I read the article you listed and not ONE word about anyone's sexuality. Domestic abuse and violence isn't just for straight folks- if affects everyone. So what if he's gay-although have NEVER heard that one....that's not the issue. The issue is did he cross the line with his mother and sister in anger. If he did, he needs to be held accountable and get the proper help.

Umm... he's been married since 2000 and they have a kid, so if he's gay, he's in hiding about it.

He was taken into custody (he turned himself in voluntarily), questioned, then released.

I was reading on a British news site that it was some sort of 'verbal' assault. I dunno what to make of that one. Sounds like some sort of family argument gone awry.

"I know the old Batman movies were really bad,"... You mean Batman and Robin with George Clooney? Yep that was bad, but the two with Keaton and the one with Val Kilmer were quite good.

I saw it last night. Ledger was wonderful! I agree with the comment that "at times the movie was a bit too much to take in." I thoroughly enjoyed it but feel like I need to see it again to really take it all in.
