brides-to-be: are you changing your last name?

by Golo Managing Editor
Published Jul. 20, 2008

A question to all of you brides-to-be out there: Do you plan to change your last name, hyphenate, or keep your own? I took my husband's last name almost 14 years ago, but I've often wondered if I would have done that had I gotten married in my 30's, when my career was already in full swing.

In many industries, your name is important, particularly when it comes to networking and staying in touch with colleagues.

Someone could be looking for Cheryl Jones, to offer her the job of her dreams, but can't reach her because she is now Cheryl Goldensplatt. See what I mean? But I know that isn't an issue for everyone, it's just one that comes to mind.

So, what are your plans? And do you think there are any circumstances that would REQUIRE a woman to do one or the other?

Unless you are a professional and people in your business know you by your maiden name, change to your husband's name. I tried to use a hyphen but that only confused people.

I am getting married in November for the first time and I'm in my late 30's. I never considered changing my name - at least not at first. I have been shocked by the responses I get from people when I tell them this! I like my maiden name, I have worked hard to make a name for myself and I did not think in 2008 it would be an issue. My fiance' does not seem to mind - at least not yet!

Nice to see a man's perspective. I don't plan to change mine, did with my 1st and 2nd. Was too much of a headache to change it back especially @ DMV IN NC you would have thought I was a crimminal they way they acted!!!!!!!! Had all the paperwork with all the official stamps on them too!!!! The FEDERAL Gov didn't give me any trouble.

Oh good grief! Can we get over being so PC! I married my husband, am so proud of him I would never consider being anything but his loving wife with his last name. I have been a licensed insurance agent for 18 years - a licensed bridal consultant for 15 and changed all my licenses and it hasn't hurt anything. Can we find something pertinent to discuss?

I can't get married in North Carolina, so I don't have to worry about my last name or my friend's...

I dropped my middle name, made my maiden name my middle name and then took his last name. No hyphen, just middle and last switcheroo.

When I married the first time, I changed my last name to his. In my second marriage I added his name, but I hyphenated still using my first marriage name, because my of my kids (from my first marriage). I also kept part of my first marriage name because so many people knew me by that name. My son married about 1-1/2 ago and his wife kept her maiden name. I really don't think my son was happy about that, but he didn't make a fuss about it.

i didnt change mine..and being such a large hearted women i didnt make him changed his.

the hyphen is so PC and down right (as most people think but wount say)pathetic. Either commit and change the name or keep your ame and stay single. Keeping the maiden name or using a hyphen is planning in advance for divorce. The more you plan for it, it more likely it is to happen. The hyphen is just a symbol of the down-fall of American society and the crumbling of the American family.

My husband was hurt at the mere suggestion by others of me keeping my maiden name. However, I know how confusing it can be for teachers when kids' and parents' names aren't the same.

Last year a friend of mine got married and she and her husband both hyphenated their last names; I liked that idea.
