brides-to-be: are you changing your last name?
by Golo Managing EditorPublished Jul. 20, 2008
A question to all of you brides-to-be out there: Do you plan to change your last name, hyphenate, or keep your own? I took my husband's last name almost 14 years ago, but I've often wondered if I would have done that had I gotten married in my 30's, when my career was already in full swing.
In many industries, your name is important, particularly when it comes to networking and staying in touch with colleagues.
Someone could be looking for Cheryl Jones, to offer her the job of her dreams, but can't reach her because she is now Cheryl Goldensplatt. See what I mean? But I know that isn't an issue for everyone, it's just one that comes to mind.
So, what are your plans? And do you think there are any circumstances that would REQUIRE a woman to do one or the other?

Last year a friend of mine got married and she and her husband both hyphenated their last names; I liked that idea.
