science word of the day
Published Jul. 19, 2008Uranus - Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. It's the third largest planet in the solar system. It is named after the Greek god Uranus, god of the sky. It is also the only planet named for a Greek god rather than a Roman god. The element uranium is named in honor of the planet. It was discovered in 1781 and was the first planet discovered by telescope.
The interior of Uranis is full of gas, though compared to the other gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, it has a much icier atmosphere. It is the coldest planet in the solar system with minimum temperatures of -400 degrees f (that's -224 c for those of you who like soccer).
There are rings around Uranus. Sometimes they are flat-on to viewers and sometime they're on edge. Due to the amount of gas in Uranus, it's surface is a featureless globe.
Uranus has moons. Imagine getting mooned by Uranus! Hahaha! Uranus has 27 known moons. The largest moon is half the size of our moon.
In popular culture, Uranus has been featured in Buck Rogers, Dr Who and Space Patrol. Many of you may remember the Star Trek episode where the USS Enterprise circled around Uranus to pick off Klingons.
Today's science word is Uranus!
