how far is it to the country? changing times...

Published Jul. 19, 2008

It took 5 minutes to get out of town when I was young.

Out of town being in the presence of trees, fenced pastures, sight of a cow, chicken, tractor and NO retail businesses other than a gas mart/general store.

When I came to Raleigh in 1970, I could be OUT OF TOWN in five minutes, ten at the most. I can drive 45 minutes now and NOT be out of town if I drive west, for Cary, Apex, Chapel Hill, Durham have blended into essentially one city.

Trees are everywhere in this city. Coming into RDU, it is mostly treetops you see out the airplane window. Cattle, I don't think they even keep them on NCSU farms anymore. Remember the scenic view the current Vet School property used to pose? Barns, cattle, pond, green rolling pasture were there at the edge of town.

Some of you live out in the country, have to drive into town to work, and shop, but you have the land and some nature. Hope you enjoy it. Air conditioning has stolen the outdoors from southerners. The heat used to force us from our homes all afternoon. That's when porches were used. I went through Oakwoods after leaving the cemetary last week, and NOT ONE PORCH had a person on it. It was the afternoon, and perfect for sitting out to get cool. Windows closed, A/C running. Porches seemed more for show.

TV & air conditioning have made great changes to how we live in and about our homes. I know we sit more, a lot more, and we have learned to eat in the living room while sitting. Another change has come with communications -- the cell phone and computer. We talk a lot more, with a lot more people, who are not there in front of us, yet, I suspect, we talk less with those around us in the house.

So true! Beautiful blog. I just reminded myself the other day as I walked out of work that I need to take a walk in nature again and just marvel at the plants and animals.

This is relaxing to me, and I get so caught up in just living that I forget how wonderful the outdoors really is.

Great post oldrebel

Folks on my road have chickens. I have to pass them and they're often roaming the neighborhood.

Last Thursday after work I stopped by a little store out on Poole Rd not too far from the house. I'd been meaning to, since I know they farm and sell their vegetables. Well, walking in there was like stepping back into the past, it made me feel so peaceful and at home. Olde Country Store. Ms Kirk was so nice, we talked awhile, then when her hubby and grandson came in, she went out to pick some tomatoes so I could buy some. I sat in a leather & wood chair on on the front brick patio, sank down in it about 3 inches, and thought, if she didn't hurry I could fall asleep right there. Then we talked some more, I met her neighbor who had been out picking okra for her. When I left, I thought how fortunate I am to have this country life so close at hand.

My family didn't have a/c until I was a teenager. To this day, I crack the window in my bedroom, (I did it just last night), to listen to the critters outside.

I live in N. Durham on a small isolated road. My front porch view is woods. 2-3 mins up the road are farms. I still deal with tractors in the roads, (I don't mind). It was important for me to have a large front porch when we bought a home. I spent many a summer at my aunt's house with a bowl of green beans in my small lap, listening to neighbors chat about whomever wasn't there.

We had air conditioning when I was growing up but my father would not turn it on until late August or early September. He did this because we farmed and we needed to be heat tolerant as much as possible.( the other reason may have been he was so tight with money he squeaked when he walked) So we wouldn't get the proverbial " monkey on our back". I love country living, I wouldn't want to live any other way.

Hey, if people were out on their porches, they would have a laptop instead of newspaper, and some would spoil it with headphones. I see people jogging and walking and wearing headphones, blocking out any natural sounds they might find.

Tea talk...hmmm...you say your OWN blend...I can't make tea. I've buying the red diamond from Lowes, sugar free, and was drinking it by the gallon, but Lowe's just won't keep the yellow top in stock. I had one glass yesterday, water with a tiny tube of tea dropped in...no good. Now, most won't drink the Red Diamond. I have Lipton, bags, and I guess I leave the tea bags in too long. I don't know, and I use splenda with it. I like it weak, real weak. I never drank tea most of my life cause people had it so sweet, sickeningly sweet to me. I'm seeking a beverage, not soda, not sweet, but probably what I'm missing is the caffeine. Any tricks, recipes, ideas appreciated..and make it a new blog with http://healthyt4u.com/images/iced-tea-pitcher-sm.jpg for a picture.

I live in the country and love it.Late in the evenning i sit out side as often as i can and have my coffee in the mornings out on the porch.I look at the stars at night stars remind me that God is shining his light on me nd i have nothing to fear.
